The Special Education Teacher at West Perry Elementary School is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support services to students with disabilities in accordance with Individual Education Programs (IEPs), state regulations, and district expectations. The teacher works collaboratively with staff, families, and service providers to ensure students receive meaningful access to the general education curriculum and opportunities for success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for eligible students.
- Provide direct instruction in academic, behavioral, functional, and social-emotional skill areas based on student needs.
- Modify and adapt curriculum, assignments, and assessments to meet individual learning needs.
- Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusion and co-teaching models.
- Use research-based instructional strategies and interventions to improve student achievement.
- Maintain accurate special education records, progress monitoring data, service logs, and compliance documentation.
- Conduct progress reports and communicate student growth toward IEP goals with families.
- Participate in ARC/IEP meetings and collaborate with parents, staff, and related service providers.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and district special education laws, policies, and timelines.
- Support positive student behavior through behavior intervention plans, classroom strategies, and relationship-building.
- Create a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment.
- Assist in identifying students who may need interventions or referrals for additional services.
- Collaborate with counselors, administrators, interventionists, and support staff.
- Participate in PLC meetings, faculty meetings, professional development, and required trainings.
- Supervise instructional assistants/paraprofessionals when assigned.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student records and sensitive information.
- Assist with school-wide duties such as arrival, dismissal, hallway, lunch, or testing supervision as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or district administration.
