Job Title: Perfume Analyst / Fragrance Evaluator
Department: Product Development & Brand Strategy
Location: Mumbai
Position Overview
We are seeking an analytical, trend-conscious Perfume Analyst to guide our scent development pipeline and strengthen our fragrance portfolio. In this role, you will act as the critical bridge between external fragrance houses (B2B suppliers) and our internal brand team.
Your primary mission will be twofold: rigorously evaluating scent submissions against strict technical and olfactive briefs, and performing continuous portfolio analysis to identify strategic product gaps, emerging market trends, and expansion opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Fragrance Submission & Olfactive Evaluation
* Briefing Fragrance Houses: Draft comprehensive olfactory and technical briefs for partner fragrance houses/perfumers based on target demographics, launch goals, and price points.
* Scent Assessment & Blind Testing: Conduct rigorous sensory evaluations (olfactive profiling, top/heart/base note evolution, sillage, projection, and longevity) on blotters and skin.
* Feedback Loops: Provide precise, constructive olfactive feedback to fragrance house perfumers to refine submissions until they meet brand quality standards.
* Performance & Stability Testing: Oversee stability, oxidation, and skin-wear testing in coordination with Quality Assurance and R&D teams.
2. Portfolio Gap Analysis & Olfactory Mapping
* Portfolio Auditing: Map out our existing scent catalog across olfactory families (e.g., Woody, Floral, Gourmand, Fresh, Amber) to identify over-saturated areas and missing scent profiles.
* White Space Identification: Analyze global and regional fragrance trends to pinpoint untapped "white spaces" and propose new perfume concepts that align with consumer demand.
* Competitor Benchmarking: Continuously evaluate competitor launches, bestsellers, and niche offerings to ensure our portfolio maintains a competitive edge.
* Cannibalization Prevention: Ensure new fragrance additions offer distinct olfactive positioning rather than competing with our own current bestsellers.
3. Vendor Management & Library Maintenance
* Maintain an organized, well-documented Fragrance Library of raw materials, accords, submission rounds, and approved concentrates.
* Manage communications, timelines, and sample tracking across multiple fragrance house partners.
* Coordinate compliance documentation (IFRA certificates, Allergen statements, MSDS) alongside procurement and compliance teams.
4. Cross-Functional Collaboration
* Marketing & Creative: Translate complex scent profiles into compelling consumer-facing descriptions, scent pyramids, and storytelling angles.
* Sales & E-Commerce: Review performance metrics (reorder rates, customer feedback, return reasons) to correlate scent profiles with commercial performance.
Candidate Qualifications & Skills
Experience & Education
* Experience: 2–5 years of experience as a Fragrance Evaluator, Perfume Analyst, or Product Developer within the fragrance/personal care industry.
* Education: Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Cosmetology, Business, Marketing, or a specialized degree/certification in Perfumery/Olfactory Sciences (e.g., ISIPCA, Grasse Institute).
Technical & Olfactory Skills
* Trained Olfactory Palette: Strong ability to identify and describe olfactory notes, accords, and fragrance families accurately.
* Data-Driven Analysis: Proficiency in mapping product matrices, analyzing sales data against scent profiles, and conducting competitor research.
* Brief Alignment: Sharp eye for evaluating whether a scent delivers on its intended commercial concept and emotional hook.
Soft Skills
* Sensory Communication: Ability to articulate scent nuances in clear language for both technical perfumers and non-technical marketing teams.
* Project Management: Organized and capable of managing multiple fragrance submissions across diverse launch timelines.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
* Submission Approval Rate: Ratio of accepted fragrance house submissions vs. total iterations (driving efficiency in scent development timelines).
* Portfolio Gap Coverage: Successful launch rate of proposed "white space" fragrance families.
- * Product Success Rate: Commercial performance and customer satisfaction metrics of launched scents developed under your evaluation.
