POINT DEFIANCE ZOO & AQUARIUM - Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is the only combined zoo and aquarium in the Pacific Northwest. The 29-acre zoological park was established in 1905, and attracts over 800,000 visitors a year. It is nationally accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), which ensures rigorously high standards of animal welfare, veterinary care, conservation, education and more. The Zoo sits within 700-acre Point Defiance Park, offering spectacular views of Mount Rainier, the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound. Point Defiance Zoo is operated by Metro Parks Tacoma, the oldest independent park district in Washington.

POSITION INFORMATION - Under the direction of the Visitor Services Supervisor, perform a variety of duties related to the maintenance and operation activities of the cashier's assigned location. In the performance of their respective tasks and duties all employees are expected to:
- Perform quality work within deadlines with or without direct supervision.
- Interact professionally with other employees, customers and suppliers.
- Work effectively as a team contributor on all assignments.
- Work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and organizations.
- Observe applicable safety requirements, use safety equipment provided, implement appropriate safety practices at all times and report immediately any unsafe working conditions or hazards.
Position Duties
Greet the public and interact in a courteous and gracious manner.
Accurately operate a point of sale machine in assigned area.
Accurately complete financial paperwork as required for assigned area.
Keep work area neat and clean.
Perform daily opening and closing procedures as required.
Act as an information center for the assigned location.
Answer the telephone in a courteous and gracious manner.
Collect and maintain the lost and found department.
Provide information, assistance and directions to visitors and the general public.
Receive and resolve complaints and issues as required; assist lost children and others as appropriate.
Based on the area of assignment, essential duties may also include:
Greet and assist guests with scanning their tickets as they enter the park.
Operate a handheld scanning device.
Operate the carousel.
Facilitate stroller and wheelchair rentals.
Sell tickets and Zoo memberships.
Assist in the set up and break down of admissions area including stanchions, umbrellas, pop-up tents, and signage.
Assist in maintaining an organized and clean admission area, and sanitizing guest areas.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be able to work weekends and holidays as needed.
- Must be customer service oriented with a positive and cheerful attitude.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with the general public and fellow staff.
- Previous point of sales (POS) experience desirable but not required
Other Qualifications
SCHEDULE:
- Part-time, up to 29 hours per week
- Hours and days each week may vary
ENVIRONMENT:
- Constantly work outdoors, occasionally in extreme weather conditions
- Working in close proximity to other employees and visitors
- Occasional indoor work environment, continual noise
- Supports occasional emergency medical situations
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a cash register
- Can be in stationary position for extended periods of time
- Can move, traverse, and position self to collect and distribute rental equipment
- Can communicate and exchange information accurately
- Can observe details at close range
- Lifting up to 30 pounds
