Job Title: Freelance Cobol Developer (Freelance)

Job Overview: We are looking for an experienced Senior COBOL Developer to assist in building a mainframe analysis accelerator. The initial phase of the project involves developing scripts/utilities to extract structured metadata from COBOL programs and related artifacts on a mainframe system. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, deep experience with COBOL and mainframe environments, and the ability to design tooling that parses and exports program information for downstream automation and analysis.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop scripts/tools to extract and export metadata from COBOL programs.
- Analyze COBOL source code to capture structured information including:
- Data Division definitions
- Procedure Division logic
- Program call relationships (Call Analysis)
- Embedded SQL statements
- Program metadata and dependencies
- Build utilities to export extracted data into structured formats (e.g., JSON, CSV, XML, or database tables).
- Work closely with the project lead to design an extensible extraction framework for future accelerator capabilities.
- Ensure scripts can handle large COBOL codebases efficiently.
- Document extraction logic and data structures for future phases of the project.
Mandatory Requirements
- 5+ years of COBOL development experience
- Strong experience with IBM Mainframe environments (z/OS)
- Deep understanding of:
- COBOL program structure
- Data Division and Procedure Division
- JCL
- Copybooks
- Program call structures
- Experience with Embedded SQL (DB2 preferred)
- Strong analytical and code parsing skills
- Experience building code analysis or metadata extraction tools
- Ability to work independently in a freelance/consulting capacity
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with mainframe modernization or code analysis tools.
- Knowledge of static code analysis techniques.
- Experience exporting metadata into structured formats for downstream automation or AI tools.
- Familiarity with REXX, Python, or other scripting languages used with mainframes.
Contract Details
- Duration: 3 Months (Contract Basis).
- Commitment: 20 Hours per Week.
