Job Summary
The Optometrist is responsible for conducting comprehensive eye examinations, diagnosing refractive errors, prescribing corrective lenses, recommending appropriate optical products, and educating customers on eye health. The role also involves supporting community eye screening programs, collaborating with the pharmacy and diagnostics teams, and delivering exceptional customer service while maintaining professional and ethical standards.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive eye examinations using standard optometric equipment.
- Perform refraction and prescribe spectacles and contact lenses where appropriate.
- Assess binocular vision, accommodation, colour vision, and visual acuity.
- Screen for common eye conditions such as cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye, and other ocular abnormalities.
- Identify patients requiring referral to an ophthalmologist.
- Maintain accurate patient records and examination findings.
- Ensure patient confidentiality and proper documentation.
Optical Sales & Customer Care
- Recommend suitable spectacle frames, ophthalmic lenses, coatings, and contact lenses based on clinical findings and customer lifestyle.
- Explain lens options including:
- Single Vision
- Bifocal
- Progressive Lenses
- Blue Light Protection
- Anti-Reflective Coating
- Photochromic Lenses
- UV Protection
- Assist customers in selecting frames based on face shape, prescription, comfort, and budget.
- Achieve optical sales targets while maintaining ethical clinical practice.
- Handle customer queries, complaints, and after-sales support professionally.
Community Eye Care
- Conduct eye screening camps in residential communities, corporate offices, schools, and institutions.
- Participate in preventive eye care awareness programs.
- Educate patients on digital eye strain, myopia control, diabetes-related eye care, and routine eye examinations.
- Promote annual eye check-ups for all age groups.
Collaboration with Pharmacy & Diagnostics
- Work closely with pharmacists to identify customers who may benefit from eye examinations.
- Refer customers for diagnostic investigations where clinically indicated or advised by the treating doctor (e.g., blood sugar testing for diabetic eye care).
- Coordinate with the healthcare team to deliver an integrated patient experience.
Operational Responsibilities
- Ensure calibration and proper maintenance of optical equipment.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of the examination room.
- Monitor optical inventory including frames, lenses, accessories, and contact lenses.
- Coordinate with optical laboratories for order processing and timely delivery.
- Verify spectacle fitting and quality before customer delivery.
- Maintain daily reports on eye tests, orders, referrals, and sales.
Compliance & Quality
- Follow company SOPs and professional standards.
- Ensure compliance with applicable healthcare regulations.
- Maintain patient records accurately.
- Protect patient privacy and confidentiality.
- Participate in internal audits and quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
Essential
- Bachelor of Optometry (B.Optom) or equivalent recognized qualification.
- Valid registration with the applicable State Optometry Council or professional body, where required.
- Good clinical knowledge of refraction and primary eye care.
Preferred
- 1–3 years of experience in retail optical practice.
- Fresh graduates with strong clinical skills may also apply.
