Role Description The Lead Optical Engineer is a full-time, on-site role based in Bengaluru South. This role is responsible for leading the design, development, and optimization of optical systems and payloads used in satellite-based imaging and remote sensing applications. The Lead Optical Engineer will oversee requirements definition, optical design and simulation, tolerance analysis, and integration of optical components with mechanical and electronic subsystems. Day-to-day tasks include collaborating with cross-functional teams, guiding junior engineers, working with vendors and manufacturing partners, and ensuring performance, reliability, and calibration of optical instruments. The role also involves reviewing test data, troubleshooting optical issues, contributing to system-level architecture decisions, and documenting designs and processes for internal and external stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Candidates should possess strong optical design and engineering skills, including experience with lenses, imaging systems, and optical payloads for remote sensing or related applications.
- Candidates should possess skills in optical simulation and analysis tools, such as Zemax, Code V, or equivalent, and be able to perform tolerance analysis and stray light assessments.
- Candidates should possess experience in system integration and testing, including alignment of optical assemblies, calibration procedures, and performance validation in laboratory or field environments.
- Candidates should possess knowledge of sensors and imaging technologies, such as CCD/CMOS detectors, hyperspectral or multispectral imaging, and associated signal processing concepts.
- Candidates should possess strong problem-solving and collaboration skills, with the ability to work closely with mechanical, electronics, and data science teams on complex, multi-disciplinary projects.
- Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline, with several years of relevant industry or research experience in optical system design.
- Experience with space or aerospace-grade systems, environmental qualification, and reliability considerations is highly beneficial.
- Effective communication skills, ability to mentor team members, and a track record of technical leadership in optical projects are strongly preferred.
