Our client is seeking a Senior Optical Engineer to lead the architecture, design, and integration of vision systems for the life sciences platform. Your responsibilities as optical engineer will include handling the entire optical lifecycle—from initial conceptual design and stray-light simulation to component selection, prototyping, and transfer to manufacturing.
You will work closely with mechanical, electrical, and computer vision engineers to develop high-precision electromechanical systems that capture, illuminate, and analyze biological samples with micron-level accuracy.
Key Responsibilities
• Optical Architecture: Design and develop complex optical systems, including illumination pathways (LED, other lighting sources), imaging optics (lenses, objectives, filters), and sensor integration (CMOS/CCD).
• Modeling & Simulation: Perform sequential and non-sequential ray tracing, tolerancing, and stray-light analysis using optical design software (e.g., ZemaxOpticStudio, Code V, or LightTools).
• Component Selection & Vendor Management: Specify, source, and evaluate off-the-shelf and custom optical components (microscopes, mirrors, filters, beamsplitters). Establish relationships with global optical fabrication partners.
• Testing & Metrology: Design and build optical test benches to characterize system performance, including MTF (Modulation Transfer Function), wavefront distortion, distortion, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).
• Cross-Functional Integration: Collaborate with Mechanical Engineers on optomechanical mountings and thermal stability, and with Computer Vision Engineers to optimize image quality for algorithmic processing.
• Regulatory Compliance: Ensure adherence to applicable regulatory requirements.
Qualifications & Skills
• Education: Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, or a closely related discipline.
• Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience designing and commercializing complex optical/imaging systems, preferably within the life sciences, or biopharma instrumentation industries.
• Software Proficiency: optical modelling and analysissoftware
• Domain Expertise: Understanding of Kohler/critical illumination, fluorescence imaging, micros and digital image sensor technology.
• Optomechanics: Proven experience with precision optomechanical alignment techniques and understanding the impact of thermal and mechanical stress on optical performance.
• Camera interfaces: Knowledge of camera interfaces (MIPI, USB3, GigE) and basic image sensor firmware tuning.
