Role Summary
The Operations Manager will be responsible for managing the complete manufacturing operations of the plant, including production planning, manpower management, quality coordination, vendor coordination, stores, dispatch, maintenance support, and continuous improvement. The role requires strong leadership, discipline, cost control, and the ability to deliver products on time with required quality standards.
Key Responsibilities1. Production & Operations Management
- Plan, monitor, and control daily, weekly, and monthly production activities.
- Ensure production targets are achieved as per delivery schedules.
- Coordinate with design, purchase, stores, quality, maintenance, and dispatch teams.
- Monitor machine utilization, manpower productivity, and shop-floor efficiency.
- Ensure smooth execution of fabrication, machining, assembly, testing, painting, packing, and dispatch activities.
2. Planning & Execution
- Prepare production plans based on customer orders and delivery commitments.
- Track job progress at every stage and remove bottlenecks.
- Ensure availability of raw materials, bought-out items, tools, fixtures, drawings, and work instructions before production starts.
- Conduct daily production review meetings and update management on progress.
3. Quality & Process Control
- Ensure products are manufactured as per approved drawings, specifications, quality plans, and customer requirements.
- Coordinate with the quality department for stage inspection, final inspection, testing, and documentation.
- Reduce rejection, rework, and warranty complaints through process discipline.
- Ensure compliance with ISO, customer, railway, or industry-specific quality requirements.
4. Manpower & Shop-Floor Management
- Allocate manpower effectively across production areas.
- Supervise supervisors, engineers, operators, fitters, welders, machinists, and assembly teams.
- Maintain discipline, attendance, safety, housekeeping, and productivity on the shop floor.
- Train and guide team members to improve skills and output.
5. Cost Control & Productivity Improvement
- Monitor production costs, overtime, consumables, wastage, and idle time.
- Improve productivity through better planning, tooling, fixtures, process improvements, and layout changes.
- Implement lean manufacturing practices such as 5S, Kaizen, visual management, and continuous improvement.
- Identify and eliminate non-value-added activities.
6. Maintenance & Equipment Utilization
- Coordinate with maintenance team to ensure machines, cranes, compressors, test rigs, tools, and equipment are available and reliable.
- Plan preventive maintenance without affecting production schedules.
- Minimize breakdowns and production losses.
7. Stores, Purchase & Vendor Coordination
- Coordinate with purchase and stores for timely availability of materials and components.
- Follow up for critical bought-out items, subcontracted parts, and vendor supplies.
- Monitor material consumption and avoid excess inventory or shortages.
8. Dispatch & Customer Commitment
- Ensure finished goods are ready for inspection, packing, and dispatch as per schedule.
- Coordinate with logistics and customer inspection agencies where required.
- Support documentation for dispatch, test certificates, inspection reports, and compliance records.
9. Reporting & MIS
- Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly production reports.
- Report production status, pending jobs, delays, manpower utilization, rejection levels, and improvement actions.
- Maintain records related to production, manpower, machine loading, quality issues, and dispatch status.
10. Safety & Compliance
- Ensure safe working practices across the plant.
- Enforce use of PPE and safety procedures.
- Maintain proper housekeeping and 5S standards.
- Ensure compliance with statutory, environmental, and factory safety requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical, Production, Industrial Engineering, or related field.
- Additional qualification in operations management, lean manufacturing, or quality systems will be preferred.
Required Experience
- 3 to 5 years of experience in manufacturing operations.
- Minimum 3 to 5 years in a managerial or plant operations role.
- Experience in engineering manufacturing, fabrication, machining, assembly, railway products, automotive components, heavy engineering, SPM, or industrial equipment manufacturing preferred.
Required Skills
- Strong production planning and shop-floor management skills.
- Good knowledge of machining, fabrication, welding, assembly, testing, and inspection processes.
- Ability to read engineering drawings and understand BOMs.
- Knowledge of ISO systems, quality plans, inspection procedures, and customer audits.
- Good leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to coordinate with multiple departments and vendors.
- Cost-conscious, target-oriented, and disciplined approach.
- Knowledge of ERP / Tally / production planning software will be an added advantage.
