Role: Technical Lead – Hands-on Engineering
About the Role
We are looking for a hands-on Open Source Tech Lead who can lead technical development while remaining actively involved in coding, architecture, troubleshooting, and code reviews.
The ideal candidate should have strong experience with the JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystem, particularly Node.js, NestJS, and MongoDB, along with practical experience building and deploying applications on AWS.
You will work closely with the engineering team to make technical decisions, solve complex problems, establish engineering best practices, and ensure applications are secure, scalable, and production-ready.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead technical design and development while remaining hands-on with coding.
- Design and develop scalable backend applications using Node.js, TypeScript, and NestJS.
- Work extensively with MongoDB, including schema design, indexing, query optimization, and performance tuning.
- Define and maintain CI/CD pipelines and development workflows.
- Design, deploy, and troubleshoot applications on AWS.
- Establish and enforce application security guardrails, secure coding practices, authentication/authorization, secrets management, and dependency security.
- Conduct code reviews and help the team improve code quality and engineering practices.
- Troubleshoot complex technical and production issues and drive problems to resolution.
- Make pragmatic architectural decisions and document technical approaches where required.
- Mentor developers and provide technical guidance without becoming disconnected from hands-on development.
- Collaborate effectively with product, engineering, and other stakeholders.
Required Skills & Experience
- 5+ years of professional software development experience.
- Strong hands-on experience with:
- JavaScript / TypeScript
- Node.js
- NestJS
- MongoDB
- REST APIs / backend development
- Git and modern software development practices
- Practical experience with AWS services and cloud-based application deployment.
- Experience setting up or working with CI/CD pipelines.
- Good understanding of application security and security guardrails.
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to understand existing open-source technologies and make appropriate technical decisions around them.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of technical problems.
Good to Have
- Previous experience developing healthcare applications or healthcare technology platforms.
- Understanding of HIPAA and healthcare application security.
- Experience with FHIR, HL7, or healthcare interoperability.
- Experience with Docker and containerized deployments.
- Experience with infrastructure monitoring, logging, and performance optimization.
- Contributions to or experience working with open-source projects.
