Core Coding Expertise
- Strong proficiency in CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II coding
- Demonstrated expertise in Orthopedic specialty coding, including:
- Fractures, dislocations, sprains/strains
- Arthroscopy, joint replacements, spinal procedures
- Casting, splinting, and injections
- Advanced knowledge of Evaluation & Management (E/M) coding guidelines (including 2021+ documentation standards)
- Ability to accurately assign modifiers (e.g., -25, -57, -59, -76, -RT/LT, -XS/XU) based on documentation
Documentation & Compliance
- Strong understanding of medical necessity, payer-specific guidelines, and LCD/NCD policies
- Ability to analyze provider documentation and identify gaps or query opportunities
- Ensure compliance with AMA, CMS, and payer-specific regulations
- Experience with audit readiness and coding quality standards (≥95% accuracy target)
Procedure Coding Skills
- Expertise in minor and major orthopedic surgical procedures
- Ability to distinguish between global vs. non-global services
- Experience coding:
- Surgical packages (pre/post-op considerations)
- In-office vs. facility-based procedures
- Strong understanding of bundling/unbundling (NCCI edits)
E/M Coding Capabilities
- Accurate leveling of office, outpatient, hospital, and consult visits
- Strong knowledge of:
- MDM elements (Medical Decision Making)
- Time-based coding when applicable
- Ability to appropriately link E/M with procedures (modifier -25 usage)
Analytical & Productivity Skills
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to meet:
- Productivity targets (e.g., charts per hour/day)
- Quality benchmarks
- Ability to manage high-volume workloads with quick turnaround times
- Strong problem-solving skills to resolve coding edits and denials
Communication & Collaboration
- Ability to effectively communicate with providers regarding documentation improvement
- Participate in coding education and feedback sessions
- Work collaboratively with billing, auditing, and compliance teams
