About the team you’ll be part of


The Communications team at Ofcom plays a crucial role in engaging with the public, the media, and our colleagues to enhance understanding of Ofcom’s work. The team delivers a multi-channel communications strategy that builds trust, informs stakeholders, and supports the organisation's objectives.


The purpose and scope of the role


The Communications Associate will support the delivery of high-quality external and internal communications, working across media relations, social media, and internal communications. The role will involve crafting compelling content, engaging with journalists and social media audiences, and helping to keep Ofcom’s employees informed and inspired.


Your Key Responsibilities


Media Relations:


  • Support the media team in responding to journalist enquiries and managing Ofcom’s reputation in the press.
  • Draft media responses, press releases, and briefing documents.
  • Monitor media coverage and produce summaries and insights.
  • Spot proactive opportunities, taking account of the news agenda and topical events, to promote Ofcom’s work.
  • Manage our communications planning grid.


Social Media:


  • Contribute to the planning, drafting, and publishing of content across Ofcom’s social media channels, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and audience engagement.
  • Monitor social media trends and engagement, flagging opportunities and risks.
  • Support the development of multimedia content, including graphics and video.
  • Support monitoring of Ofcom’s social media performance and wider online mentions of Ofcom.


Internal Communications:


  • Support the delivery of internal communications that engage Ofcom’s employees with our work, culture, and strategic priorities.
  • Create compelling written, visual, and multimedia content for internal platforms, including our intranet (Hive).
  • Assist in planning and delivering internal events and engagement activities.
  • Help maintain and update key internal communications channels, ensuring they remain engaging and accessible.


The skills, knowledge and experience you’ll need for success


  • Awareness of the requirements of a communications role, understanding the basics of media relations, social media, and internal communications.
  • Awareness of methods of social media management and content creation.
  • Experience in drafting press releases, social media posts, and internal communications materials a plus (but not required).
  • Experience in using multimedia tools, such as video editing software or design platforms, is a plus (but not required).


Other skills:


  • Articulating Ideas: Strong writing skills, with the ability to craft clear, engaging, and accurate content for different audiences and channels.
  • Harmonising work: Experience in working in a fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders.
  • Executing Plans: Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Owning Accountabilities: Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • No mandatory qualifications required for the role. Relevant experience and demonstrable skills will be prioritised.
