Job Summary
Under direction of the Grounds Manager, Grounds Maintenance A safely performs complicated tasks of a higher difficulty and complexity within the sports fields, grounds and landscape specialties related to the grounds maintenance functions at the College.
This position is represented for purposes of collective bargaining by the Teamsters.
Job Duties
- 30% - Uses a variety of grounds maintenance hand tools (e.g. rake, shovel, hoe, pruning shears) and power tools, (e.g. hedge trimmer, blower, string trimmer, edger and lawn mower) to perform the basic duties required at the College in support of sports fields and grounds maintenance. - (Essential)
- 40% - Basic duties include digging, raking, mowing, trimming, edging, watering, weeding; moving sod, soil and mulch; planting flowers, hedges and trees; tree pruning, landscape and/or turf and sod installation, blowing and sweeping, changing trash bags, collecting litter, power-washing surfaces, etc. Fully qualified in all the tasks associated with the College’s sports fields, grounds maintenance and landscaping needs. - (Essential)
- 20% - Operates the larger pieces of grounds equipment (e.g. skip loader, forklift, gang mower, lawn sweeper). - (Essential)
- 10% - Receives direct and specific direction from immediate supervisor as to work assignments and quantity and quality of work expectations. Keeps track of own labor, materials and supplies used and reports these accurately. Generally can perform all tasks and duties with little supervision. May act as a job or task leader. Some specialization may occur. - (Essential)
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Read, write and understand directions in English.
- Five years of progressively responsible experience in landscaping or grounds maintenance and/or related activities.
- Knowledge of various lawn varieties and invasive lawn weeds.
- General horticultural comprehension of plant materials.
- Proficiency in Google/Microsoft Office applications applicable to position responsibilities.
- Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and thorough; skilled at anticipating and preventing potential problems and handling a wide variety of tasks with efficiency and accuracy.
- Strong commitment to a quality work product. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally, in writing and electronically.
- Effective interpersonal skills as evidenced in the ability to collaborate with a variety of constituencies.

Preferred Qualifications
- Sports field maintenance certification. Qualified applicator license.
- Sports field management, Integrated pest management experience/knowledge.
EXPECTED HIRING RANGE: The starting base hourly rate for this position is $28.20/hr. After 6 months, the base hourly rate increases to $28.77/hr, and after 12 months, the base hourly rate increases to $29.23/hr.
