Role Description
The NRI Practice Manager (client facing role)– Tax, FEMA & Cross-Border Planning will lead and oversee services in tax planning, compliance, and cross-border financial strategies tailored to NRI clients. Key responsibilities include managing NRI taxation, ensuring FEMA compliance, advising on tax efficiency through DTAA structures, and developing cross-border financial planning solutions. The role involves team management, client consultations, and staying updated on global tax policies. This is a full-time, on-site role based in Kochi, India.
Qualifications/Experience
- A relevant professional qualification such as CA, Additional certification like CFP / international tax / ADIT / LLM (Taxation) or specific NRI/International tax course.
- 4–8 years post‑qualification in direct tax, of which at least 2–3 years in NRI / international tax / HNI / private client services
Client and management skills
• Strong written and spoken English; good client‑facing communication with NRIs.
• Ability to manage a small team of juniors: allocate work, review computations, ensure quality and timeliness.
• Project management: handle multiple NRI cases across jurisdictions (UAE, UK, US, etc.), track deadlines for ITR, TDS, and notices.
• Comfortable with online meetings, email‑heavy communication, and working with clients across time zones.
Technical Skills
NRI Taxation:
• Residential status, scope of income, salary, interest, capital gains, rental, business income.
• Property sale and capital gains optimisation (Section 54/54F/54EC), lower TDS applications, refund management.
• FEMA / RBI:
• NRE/NRO accounts, repatriation, LRS, gift/inheritance in cross‑border context, reporting (Form 15CA/CB, FLA/FC‑TRS exposure helpful).
• DTAA / International:
• Reading and applying DTAA articles on residence, PE, dividend/interest/royalty, relief methods, tie‑breaker rules.
• Succession / estate:
• Indian succession basics, wills for NRIs, transmission of shares, NRO assets, joint holdings, family office style structuring.
• Tools and process:
• High proficiency in Excel, tax software, and comfort working with checklists, SOPs, and automations.
Research and content capabilities
• Ability to track legislative changes in Income‑tax, FEMA, DTAA updates, and translate them into clear internal notes and client‑facing content.
• Experience drafting:
• Tax opinions and memos
• Client strategy notes (for return to India, relocation, restructuring)
• Presentation decks and webinar materials
• Comfort working with “frameworks” and checklists – your book is structured as a practical blueprint; the manager should extend that into internal playbooks, FAQ banks, and SOPs.
