Role summary: 

The Scientist – Sugarcane Applications will play a crucial role in developing, validating and implementing enzyme-based biosolutions for the sugar industry across India and the MEIA region. This position demands a deep technical understanding, data-driven problem solving and cross-functional collaboration to transform laboratory research and pilot trials into scalable industrial applications. The incumbent will partner with technical services, sales and R&D teams to drive innovation-led growth in sugarcane processing, ethanol and related biorefinery sectors.

Key Responsibilities:

·       Lead the development and optimization of enzyme-based solutions for sugarcane processing, including juice clarification, extraction efficiency, microbial control, and recovery enhancement.

·       Design, execute, and analyze mill-scale and pilot-scale trials to demonstrate performance and validate solutions under diverse operating conditions.

·       Collaborate with cross-functional teams (R&D, Technical Services, Sales, and Marketing) to ensure successful translation of innovations into market-ready applications.

·       Generate and communicate technical insights through reports, presentations, and internal knowledge-sharing sessions.

·       Conduct root-cause analysis and provide process optimization recommendations to customers and internal teams.

·       Build technical credibility with customers and industry partners through strong engagement and on-site problem solving.

·       Document and monitor application performance, collect field data, and provide structured feedback for continuous product and process improvement.

·       Contribute to sustainability initiatives by quantifying energy and resource savings achieved through enzymatic interventions.

·       Serve as a regional technical ambassador, representing Novonesis’ innovation capabilities in sugar and bioethanol applications.

·       Travel to customer sites (up to 25%) to support trials, training, and technical collaborations.

Required Qualifications:

• Master’s or Ph.D. in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Sugar Technology, or related field.

• 5–8 years of experience in industrial biotechnology, preferably in the sugar, ethanol, or biorefinery sector.

• Proven experience in application development and industrial process troubleshooting.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret large data sets and translate them into actionable insights.

• Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage both technical and commercial stakeholders.

• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a matrix organization.

• Willingness to travel across India and the MEIA region as needed.
