NMC is currently recruiting an Operating Room Aide in the Operating Room. The position is full-time (80 hours bi-weekly), generally M-F 8:30a-5:00p. OR Aide

JOB SUMMARY:

The Operating Room Aide works as an integral part of the healthcare team, responsible for maintaining a safe environment in which quality patient care is delivered. He/she works under the direct daily supervision of the Operating Room Charge Nurse.

PRE-REQUISITES:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent. VT Licensed Nursing Assistance license preferred.

Experience: One year experience in medical field preferred but not mandatory

Other Skills: Basic computer knowledge and typing skills a plus. Excellent customer satisfaction skills. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. He or she must be able to assess and interpret data about the patient's status in order to identify each patients age specific needs and provide the care needed by the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and/or geriatric patient group.

SCOPE:

Machinery or Equipment Used: Computer, basic office equipment, wheelchairs, patient’s beds, oxygen tank, stretchers.

Physical Demands: Lift and transport patients up to 25 lbs. Occasional exposure to malodorous situations. Pushes, moves or lifts heavy equipment up to 25 lbs. Considerable reaching, bending, stooping and kneeling

Working Conditions: Possible exposure to blood borne pathogens; universal precautions required. Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, illness, injuries). Subject to stressful environment due to multiple demands.

Required Protective Equipment: Includes but not limited to face and eye protection, and non-sterile medical gloves.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Patient Care Performs EKGs and blood draws for preop testing. Assists RN staff to safely transports patients to and from the surgical suite as requested. Assists Vascular Access team with PICC line placement.

2. Performs the daily check of Anesthesia machines prior to the start of the OR schedule and reports any issues to OR Charge Nurse. Maintains appropriate supply levels in Anesthesia and specialty carts.

3. Transports stretchers and beds as needed for operating rooms.

4. Delivers specimens to laboratory in a timely manner.

5. Prints up preference cards, picks cases and assembles case carts for future cases and same day add-on cases.

6. Maintains Supplies and organization of equipment room. Maintains adequate stock of all PPE at OR entrance and locker rooms. Maintains supplies in Operating Room cupboards. Maintains glideslope supplies as well as A-line and Central line kits. Assures linen and fluids are adequately stocked in warmers daily.

7. Assists with cleaning operating rooms at completion of each case in accordance with Infection Control guidelines. Proactively assists with turnover including managing OR equipment and assisting with room turnover to ensure fluid running of department. Participates in gathering and putting away equipment and supplies as necessary.

8. Assists in other areas of Surgical Services such as Ambulatory and Central Sterile when OR schedule allows.
