About the role
Role positioning An individual-contributor enterprise architecture and solution design role delivering assigned components of a domain, product, capability or delivery workstream under Lead Enterprise Architect guidance. The role translates approved strategic direction and roadmaps into detailed designs, architecture artefacts, implementation guidance and delivery evidence. It combines current-state and options analysis with hands-on participation throughout the engineering lifecycle, with decisions bounded by delegated scope and established patterns. What does this job deliver? (Key accountabilities) Build effective relationships with business, product, engineering, delivery, risk and technology stakeholders for assigned initiatives, supporting understanding and implementation of target architecture. Develop solution and implementation architecture for defined capabilities, products or change initiatives, creating practical designs that are secure, resilient, sustainable and aligned with strategic architecture, standards and reusable patterns. Deliver Solution Design Quality Assurance: Perform and support Architecture and Design Reviews for assigned solutions, verify alignment with business needs and approved standards, document findings and drive actions to closure, escalating material risks and exceptions. Contribute to architecting capability: Share practical patterns and implementation learning, support engineers and developing architects, and contribute reusable assets to the Functions CDIO architecture community. Scope and expectations Deliver assigned solution designs, product components or implementation work packages within one or more Functions CDIO architecture pillars, under Lead Enterprise Architect guidance. Contribute to strategy, target-state and roadmap development by analysing current state, dependencies, delivery constraints and implementation options. Produce and maintain detailed architecture artefacts, including HLSDs, architecture decision records, models, interface and data views, patterns, guardrails and implementation guidance. Information Classification - Confidential\Other Work directly with development teams through discovery, design, build, test, deployment and operational readiness to resolve architectural impediments and maintain design integrity. Make proportionate architecture decisions within delegated scope and escalate cross-domain, high-risk or strategic decisions to the Lead or Principal Enterprise Architect. Functions CDIO Architecture Pillars — B8 Expectations Reference Architecture Develop and maintain assigned components, views, patterns or technology building blocks within a reference architecture owned by a Lead Enterprise Architect. Analyse current-state systems, business capabilities, data flows and dependencies to inform target-state design and transition planning. Create practical implementation guidance, examples and reusable assets for delivery teams. Maintain assigned artefacts and architecture decisions in EA Hub, ensuring metadata, traceability and lifecycle status are accurate. Identify gaps, inconsistencies and technical debt and propose evidence-based remediation options. Architecture as Code Implement defined Architecture as Code features, templates, rules, schemas and workflows within EA Hub. Convert approved standards, patterns and guardrails into machine-readable and version-controlled artefacts. Build, test and improve self-service architecture journeys for developers and contribute directly to their integration with engineering toolchains. Configure and validate components of automated design creation and automated design review, investigating exceptions and improving rule quality. Curate assigned entries in the Foundational Technology Catalogue and API Catalogue, validating completeness, ownership, lifecycle and standards alignment. Incubation Products Act as the hands-on architect for defined features or technical workstreams within incubation products such as the Engineer Career Development Framework, Colleague Application Toolkit, RFP Evaluator or Agentic X. Perform architecture discovery, option analysis, prototyping, detailed design, interface definition and non-functional requirement elaboration. Work alongside engineers to validate patterns through working implementations, proofs of concept, test evidence and operational readiness activities. Evaluate emerging technologies against agreed criteria and document findings, constraints, risks and recommendations for Lead Enterprise Architect review. Package proven implementation learning as reusable patterns, decision records and guidance for wider adoption. Architecture Governance Prepare and present solution designs, decisions, risks, exceptions and implementation evidence for Functions CDIO Design Authority and other relevant forums. Perform detailed architecture and design reviews for assigned initiatives and track review actions through to closure. Information Classification - Confidential\Other Maintain architecture evidence, approvals and decision records in EA Hub and Architecture as Code workflows. Monitor implementation alignment, technical debt, control requirements and operational readiness, raising issues early and proposing corrective action. Support preparation of escalations to Architecture Council and enterprise forums where decisions exceed delegated scope. Knowledge and experience Strong working knowledge of enterprise and solution architecture methods, modern technologies including Cloud, Microservices and AI, integration, data, security, resilience, agile delivery and DevOps practices. Proven experience designing and implementing solutions within complex, regulated environments and working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams. Experience producing clear architecture artefacts, decision records, models, interface definitions, non-functional requirements and implementation guidance. Practical knowledge of reusable architecture patterns, Architecture as Code, CI/CD, technology and API catalogues, governance controls and architecture repositories such as EA Hub. Ability to analyse complex problems, evaluate options, communicate trade-offs and make sound decisions within delegated scope. Experience supporting design assurance, testing, operational readiness, risk management and remediation through the delivery lifecycle. Purpose of job Translate Functions CDIO architecture strategy and target-state direction into detailed, implementable architecture for defined sub-domains, products, capabilities and change initiatives. Provide hands-on architecture contribution throughout delivery so that solutions achieve business outcomes while remaining aligned with approved standards, controls, reusable patterns and strategic roadmaps. What are the accountabilities of the job? Take responsibility for architecture and solution design deliverables within assigned work packages, aligned with the target architecture and roadmap set by Lead Enterprise Architects and wider enterprise direction. Analyse business and technical requirements, current-state constraints and dependencies and translate them into clear architecture options and detailed solution designs. Create, maintain and govern HLSDs, architecture decision records, models, interface and data designs, non-functional requirements, implementation patterns and supporting evidence. Work as an individual contributor within development teams throughout discovery, design, build, test, deployment and operational readiness. Provide hands-on technical guidance, resolve design questions and architectural impediments, and verify that implementations remain aligned with approved decisions. Apply and promote reuse of shared digital capabilities, reference patterns, APIs and foundational technologies; identify justified exceptions and document the associated risk. Information Classification - Confidential\Other Contribute to Architecture as Code by creating and testing machine-readable controls, templates, reusable assets and automated assurance rules. Perform design reviews and prepare submissions for Design Authority, ensuring actions, risks, dependencies and decisions are recorded and progressed. Assess technology and vendor options within assigned scope and provide evidence-based recommendations to Lead and Principal Enterprise Architects. Support engineers and developing architects through practical coaching, design collaboration, review feedback and knowledge sharing. Capabilities CPC Behaviour Level Apply established architecture principles, standards and patterns to bounded solution design problems within delegated scope, seeking Lead Enterprise Architect guidance for unfamiliar, complex or strategically significant choices. Combine strategic awareness with strong implementation focus, converting architecture direction into practical designs, backlog-ready guidance and working outcomes. Use evidence, data and technical analysis to evaluate options and communicate trade-offs clearly to business and engineering stakeholders. Collaborate effectively across product, engineering, delivery, security, risk and operations and influence implementation decisions through expertise and credibility. Research emerging technologies and patterns relevant to assigned work, validate them through prototypes or implementation evidence and contribute findings to wider architecture direction. Take ownership of quality, traceability and delivery outcomes within assigned scope and escalate risks, conflicts and exceptions promptly. Conduct and Line of Defence Comply with Our Code, Purpose, Values and relevant Policies. Respect relevant regulatory obligations and Conduct Rules. This is a first line job, as described in the Three Lines of Defence Principles, responsible for intelligent risk taking and managing its direct and consequential risks. Promote a culture where risk, including financial crime and fraud, is managed effectively through prompt identification, escalation and reporting.
