Job Description – Cisco & Arista Routing & Switching SME (Level 2)
Role Title
Network Engineer – Routing & Switching SME (Cisco & Arista) – L2
Location
Global Delivery / India (24x7 operations)
Role Overview
We are looking for a highly skilled Routing & Switching SME (Level 2) to support enterprise network infrastructure built on Cisco and Arista platforms. The role focuses on incident resolution, network stability, change implementation, and performance optimization across global data center and campus networks.
The candidate must demonstrate deep troubleshooting capability, operational rigor, and ownership mindset to ensure high availability, low latency, and secure connectivity.
Key Responsibilities
1. Incident & Problem Management
- Provide L2 support for network incidents (P1/P2/P3)
- Perform advanced troubleshooting for:
- LAN/WAN issues
- Routing instability, packet drops, latency issues
- Layer 2/Layer 3 faults
- Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) and drive permanent fixes
- Participate in major incident calls and bridge coordination
- 24x7 rotational shifts and on-call support
2. Routing & Switching Operations
- Manage and troubleshoot:
- Cisco switches/routers (Catalyst, Nexus, ISR, ASR)
- Arista switches (EOS platform)
- Handle Layer 2 technologies:
- VLANs, STP (RSTP/MST), Port Channels, VPC/MLAG
- Handle Layer 3 technologies:
- Routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP)
- Static routing and route redistribution
3. Change Management & Configuration
- Implement network changes as per approved requests:
- VLAN provisioning, trunk configurations
- Routing updates, interface configuration
- Perform:
- Impact analysis before change
- Post-change validation and rollback if required
- Ensure full compliance with CAB and change governance processes
4. Monitoring, Performance & Optimization
- Monitor network health using NMS tools
- Identify and resolve:
- Bandwidth congestion
- Interface errors and packet drops
- Network bottlenecks
- Drive performance tuning and capacity planning
6. Automation & Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities for:
- Configuration automation
- Standardization of network deployment
- Work with:
- Ansible / Python / APIs (preferred)
- Contribute to:
- SOPs, runbooks, KB articles
- Reduction of manual intervention
7. Compliance, Documentation & Governance
- Maintain network documentation:
- Topologies, configs, runbooks
- Ensure adherence to:
- Enterprise security & network standards
- Audit and compliance requirements
- Participate in audit reviews and remediation tasks
Technical Skills
Mandatory
- Strong hands-on expertise in:
- Cisco Routing & Switching (Catalyst, Nexus)
- Arista Switching (EOS)
- Deep understanding of:
- TCP/IP, OSI model
- Routing protocols: BGP, OSPF, EIGRP
- Switching technologies: VLAN, STP, VPC/MLAG
- Experience in troubleshooting complex network issues
Preferred / Good to Have
- Exposure to:
- Data center fabrics (Spine-Leaf)
- VXLAN / EVPN (basic understanding)
- SD-WAN concepts
- Experience with:
- Network monitoring tools (Logic Monitor, SolarWinds, PRTG, etc.)
- Packet capture and analysis (Wireshark)
Certifications (Preferred)
- Cisco:
- CCNA / CCNP (Routing & Switching / Enterprise)
Experience
- 4–8 years in network operations / routing & switching
- Minimum 2–3 years hands-on with Cisco and/or Arista environments
