Job Summary

The role is ideal for a motivated and detail-oriented individual interested in gaining hands-on experience in seismic data management within a dynamic exploration and subsurface team.

As an intern, you will support the organization, quality control, and digital archiving of seismic datasets, contributing to the integrity and accessibility of critical geoscience data. You will be assigned a meaningful, impact-driven project that supports Murphy’s ongoing efforts in data workflow optimization and innovation.

The internship provides a unique opportunity to apply your academic knowledge in a real-world environment, collaborate with experienced professionals, and develop skills essential to a career in geoscience data management.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Organize and maintain seismic data repositories
  • Load, index, and quality-check seismic datasets to various interpretation platforms (e.g., Petrel Studio, Kingdom)
  • Support data migration, conversion, and archival (e.g., handling SEGY formats, entering metadata)
  • Collaborate with geoscientists and data management teams to ensure data accuracy and accessibility
  • Analyze data quality, coverage, and identify gaps
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in data workflows

 

 

Qualifications/Requirements

 

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a B.S. or M.S. in Geophysics, Geology, Data Science, or other technical field
  • The successful candidate for this role must be authorized to work in the United States and must not require sponsorship for employment visa status now or in the future (e.g., F1). 
  • Completion of geoscience-related coursework preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are essential
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting
  • Basic understanding of digital data formats and storage systems
  • Understanding of geophysical data acquisition, processing and interpretation
  • Exposure to seismic interpretation software (e.g., Petrel or Kingdom)
  • Other applications experience – ArcGIS, Paleoscan, DUG, HampsonRussell  
  • Interest or familiarity with emerging AI technologies, including generative or agentic AI models

 

 

The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions.  Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous/extreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs.  The successful candidate must be able to complete all essential physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
