The Media Relations Strategist supports earned media efforts for nonprofit clients through story development, media outreach, relationship building, and media engagement across traditional and digital media platforms. The ideal candidate understands today’s evolving media landscape and can effectively secure earned media coverage across broadcast, podcasts, print, online, and social-driven news environments. Responsibilities include creation and execution of strategic public relations plans, media pitching, PR training, press event management, and other tasks related to executing complex media relations strategies. Position will be within a team of in-house and contract staff to ensure client work is completed on time and within budget.

Your Impact:

  • Develop and implement strategic public relations plans that reflect a full understanding of the client’s mission and strategy. 
  • Develop integrated earned media strategies spanning traditional media, podcasts, online, and social-driven news environments. 
  • Design and manage complex issue campaigns that meet public relations KPI deliverables. 
  • Identify, interview, research, and evaluate potential media stories.  
  • Draft written message materials, including press releases, talking points, pitches, and media alerts. 
  • Pitch news stories to various media outlets, including television, podcasts, print, radio, social, and other relevant media outlets. 
  • Establish and cultivate relationships with members of the press. 
  • Manage and administer the activities of multiple accounts or industry segments in accordance with client objectives. 
  • Monitor media trends and evolving newsroom practices, including the growing influencer of earned media on generative AI search results, digital discovery, and online news environments. 
  • Performs other duties as required. 

 

Your Profile:

  • 5+ years of experience working directly with the media in an agency, news, entertainment, corporate, nonprofit, or political position.  
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or related field required.  
  • Proven background in placement in national broadcast, print, online, and digital media outlets. 
  • Maintains and cultivates relationships with national reporters, producers, editors, and relevant media contacts. 
  • Familiarity with digital media trends, podcasts, online news platforms, and social-driven news cycles. 
  • A deep understanding of today’s media landscape, newsroom production cycle, and the evolving needs of reporters, producers, digital editors, and media outlets. 
  • Great interpersonal skills with the ability to work with a variety of communication styles. 
  • Self-motivated, detail oriented, friendly, dependable, and proactive. 
  • High level of professionalism with established strong relationships with key stakeholders. 
  • Ability to coach, train and prepare client spokespersons so they can effectively and succinctly deliver key messages with ease.  
  • Ability to prepare and present complex materials or issues before a wide variety of audiences. 
  • Work well under deadline in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Must be able to multitask, have strong attention to detail, be highly organized and able to consistently manage multiple projects and multiple clients at a time. 
  • Must have excellent communication and presentation skills with comfort presenting to C-Suite clients and company leadership. 
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to shifting priorities, demands and timelines. 
  • Experience using media databases and monitoring platforms. 
  • Ability to travel when required.
