Job Purpose: To support prototyping, model making, and fabrication activities across academic and interdisciplinary research projects. This role involves managing and operating workshop facilities while mentoring students in translating design concepts into physical prototypes and functional models.
The position is ideal for candidates with strong expertise in wood and/or metal fabrication along with exposure to mixed-material model making processes used in design education and product development.
Key Responsibilities:
Support students and faculty in fabrication, prototyping, and model-making activities across wood, metal, plastic, ceramic, and mixed-material workshops. Operate and maintain workshop equipment including woodworking and metalworking machines, laser cutters, 3D printers, and finishing tools. Support collaborative projects involving industry, research, or interdisciplinary initiatives.
Maintain documentation related to workshop inventory including tools, consumables, raw materials, and equipment records. Ensure compliance with institutional safety norms and statutory regulations related to workshop usage.
Qualification & Experience:
Diploma / ITI / Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Tool & Die Making, Fabrication, Model Making, or related disciplines from a recognized institution.
Experience:
3-5 years of hands-on experience in prototyping workshops, fabrication labs, design studios.
Prior experience in an academic design institute or innovation lab will be preferred.
Skills & Competencies:
Strong practical skills in woodworking, metal fabrication, assembly, finishing, and prototype development.
Knowledge of workshop tools, machinery, and fabrication processes. Familiarity with laser cutting, 3D printing, basic CNC operations, and model finishing techniques. Understanding of materials, joints, fabrication methods, and workshop safety practices. Ability to mentor and support students in hands-on making processes. Good troubleshooting, organizational, and teamwork abilities.
Desirable Attributes:
Exposure to contemporary fabrication technologies and sustainable material practices.
Experience in supporting student competitions, exhibitions, installations, or industry-sponsored projects.
Interest in continuous learning and adapting to emerging prototyping technologies.
