About the Department

Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board's Youth and Recreation Centers Programs Department is accepting applications for highly motivated Recreation Supervisors to deliver recreation programs and services through collaborative community partnerships ensuring high level programs and services that are in alignment with the mission, vision, values, goals and objectives of the MPRB and meet the needs and interests of diverse communities. Plans, schedules, promotes, coordinates and manages the implementation of recreation programs, youth sports and special events that meet the identified need sand serves diverse neighborhoods. Exhibit an appreciation and respect for a diverse environment, inclusive of many social, economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

This position is not eligible for remote work and will be required to work variable hours including evenings, weekends, holidays, and work on-site during programs and special events to ensure success and safety.

Work schedule: 

  • A minimum of two shifts from 12:30-9:00pm
  • A maximum of two shifts from 9:30-6:00pm
  • A minimum of one shift from 11:00-7:30pm
  • Workdays include Sunday-Saturday

Position Duties

  • Accountable for planning, development, implementation, management, and evaluation of diversified recreation programs, activities, and sports, for preschool, children, teens, families, adults, people with special needs or disabilities and senior citizens, programs for one or more recreation centers and summer playground sites, ensuring the activities meet the current and future needs of the Division.
  • Strategically work variable hours including evenings, weekends, holidays, and work on-site during programs and special events to ensure success and safety.
  • Manage the planning of special events, working with other staff, volunteers and representatives from other organizations.
  • Work with community/neighborhood residents and neighborhood associations and athletic councils to provide youth sports programs, community events, coordinate meaningful recreation programs, community newsletter, enhance public relations, market programs and increase communication.
  • Manage building operations, create work orders to maintain and repair park facilities, and maintain administrative records including building usage, program participation, financial and incidents reports.
  • Thoughtfully plan, organize, coordinate and evaluate the activities of the recreation programs to ensure the program meets the current and future needs of the Recreation Division.
  • Thoroughly evaluate program alternatives and make recommendations for improvements in MPRB recreation programs and services.
  • Assist MPRB in identifying and addressing the park and recreation needs of underserved and under-represented communities.

Minimum Qualifications

Need to Have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Parks and Recreation Administration, Sports Management, or related field.
  • Experience coordinating and supervising the work of others: at least four (4) years
  • Experience planning, developing, implementing, managing, and evaluating diversified recreation programs, activities, and sports for preschool, children, teens, families, adults, people with special needs or disabilities and senior citizens: at least four (4) years.
  • Experience managing program and facility budgets: at least one (1) year.
  • Experience managing facility operations: at least one (1) year.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • An equivalent combination of related experience and education and training may be considered.
Skills Crucial to Success in This Role:
  • Considerable knowledge of recreation program development and marketing of recreation programs.
  • Knowledge of modern principles and best practices of recreation facility management and program delivery.
  • Knowledge of cultural competence in engaging people from diverse communities.
  • Ability to thoughtfully organize and creatively administer recreation activities for enhanced service delivery.
  • Ability to critically evaluate and analyze operations and data and provide meaningful reports to assist with thedevelopment of improved program and service delivery; translate data and research analysis to assist with thedevelopment and design of service and program improvements.
  • Ability to thoroughly evaluate program alternatives and make recommendations for
  • improvements in MPRB programs and services.
  • Outstanding customer service principles and practices and standards for a diverse customer base.

Selection Process:

What steps the selection process involves:

  • We review your minimum qualifications.
  • We rate your training and experience based on application materials and supplemental questions (30%).
  • We conduct a structured panel interview (oral exam) (70%).
  • We calculate your civil service score based on the above components and place you on the eligible list if all testing components are passed (passing score for each component and as an overall score is 70.00 or above). Eligible list will expire in three (3) months.
  • We refer the top finalists to the hiring manager for an interview.
  • References, including verification of employment and work performance, may be considered.
  • We conduct a background check. Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, the applicant will be asked to sign an informed consent allowing the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to obtain their criminal history in connection with the positions sought.
