Cyber Defence EngineerAbout Atech

Our Cyber Defence team works closely with customers to continuously improve their security posture through proactive engineering, exposure management and strategic remediation programmes.
About the Role
As a Cyber Defence Engineer, you will be responsible for helping customers reduce cyber risk by designing, implementing and optimising security controls across Microsoft 365, Azure and endpoint environments.
This is a hands-on security engineering role focused on proactive security improvement rather than traditional SOC operations. You will work directly with customers to identify security gaps, build remediation roadmaps, implement improvements and provide expert guidance on Microsoft security technologies.
You will become a trusted security advisor to customers, helping them improve their security maturity through practical implementation, technical consultancy and continuous security posture improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement security controls across Microsoft 365, Azure and hybrid cloud environments.
- Deliver customer security remediation roadmaps aligned to CIS Benchmarks, Microsoft Secure Score recommendations and industry best practice.
- Configure and optimise Microsoft security technologies including:
- Microsoft Defender Suite
- Microsoft Sentinel
- Microsoft Intune
- Microsoft Entra ID
- Microsoft Purview
- Defender for Cloud
- Conditional Access
- Exchange Online Protection
- Conduct security assessments, gap analyses and security posture reviews to identify opportunities for risk reduction and service improvement.
- Plan, document and implement security remediation activities through structured change-management processes.
- Work directly with customer stakeholders to understand business requirements, present recommendations and obtain approval for security improvements.
- Create technical documentation, implementation guides, standards and reusable engineering artefacts.
- Track and record engineering effort against customer remediation programmes and contribute to roadmap and service reporting activities.
- Support compliance and governance initiatives aligned to frameworks such as CIS, Cyber Essentials Plus, ISO 27001 and NIST.
- Collaborate with SOC, Cloud and Infrastructure teams to ensure the successful delivery of security outcomes.
- Contribute to automation, service development and continuous improvement initiatives across the Cyber Defence practice.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft 365 security technologies.
- Experience implementing and managing Microsoft Defender solutions.
- Strong understanding of Microsoft Intune and endpoint security.
- Experience with Microsoft Entra ID and identity security.
- Experience designing and implementing Conditional Access policies.
- Understanding of Zero Trust security principles.
- Experience managing technical changes through structured change-control processes.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills.
- Ability to produce high-quality technical and customer-facing documentation.
- Experience working in a customer-facing consultancy, managed service or security engineering environment.
Desirable Skills & Certifications
- Microsoft Sentinel experience.
- Microsoft Purview experience.
- Defender for Cloud experience.
- PowerShell, KQL or automation experience.
- Knowledge of CIS Benchmarks, Cyber Essentials Plus, ISO 27001 and NIST.
- Microsoft certifications such as SC-200, SC-300, SC-400, AZ-500, MS-102 or equivalent.
