JOB DESCRIPTION - ML Teacher
Purpose Statement:
The Multilingual Learner (ML) Teacher functions as the expert in language acquisition for the building(s) in
which they serve. The primary objective of this role is to accelerate English proficiency through targeted,
evidence-based instruction tailored to the diverse needs of ML students. The ML Teacher acts as a strategic
partner to school staff, providing the guidance, resources and culturally and linguistically responsive
strategies necessary to ensure equitable access to core content and meaningful participation in the learning
environment.
This job reports to: Building Principal and/or Assistant Principal(s) and ML Program Coordinator
Essential Functions:
● Instructional Design & Delivery:
○ Design and implement lessons using evidence-based language teaching strategies to
accelerate English proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
○ Differentiate instructional methods to provide engaging learning opportunities for small groups
and individuals, tailored to specific linguistic requirements.
○ Partner with classroom teachers to co-plan and co-teach scaffolded lessons, ensuring ML
students can access academic content while simultaneously developing language skills.
○ Maintain an instructional schedule that maximizes service delivery and aligns with the specific
support needs of the building ML population.
○ Establish and enforce a positive classroom structure that ensures academic engagement and
the physical and mental safety of all students across various school environments.
○ Direct and supervise the work of paraprofessionals, student teachers, and volunteers to
effectively address individual students needs within the ML program.
● Assessment, Planning and Compliance:
○ Develop and maintain Individual Language Plans (ILPs) for each student, setting measurable
linguistic goals and communicating strategies to ensure students' progress.
○ Evaluate language needs through various assessments (e.g., screeners, ACCESS for ELLs, and
subject-specific observations) to determine competency and recommend support.
○ Monitor and track students' progress toward learning targets, providing regular feedback to
stakeholders to inform instructional shifts.
○ Manage all mandated paperwork (e.g., grade, EL cumulative files, grades, and attendance) to
ensure full compliance with DPI policy and federal requirements.
○ Apply current knowledge of the DPI EL policy Handbook, WIDA Standards, and ML
methodologies to ensure high-quality, tailored instruction.
● Strategic Collaboration & Advocacy:
○ Collaborate with school personnel to ensure Individual Language Plans are implemented
consistently across all educational settings.
○ Serve as a primary liaison between the school and families, advising parents/guardians of
student progress and methods for reinforcing classroom goals at home.

○ Advocate for ML students to ensure equitable access to school events, specialized
programming, and a positive socio-emotional environment.
○ Act as a building-level resource for language acquisition; participate in professional
development to lead staff in improving ML student achievement.

● Support students in state and local standardized testing as indicated by their ILP.
● Promote and contribute to ML PD opportunities within your school(s).

● Flexibility to work with multiple grade levels and content area teachers and students
● Bilingual skills are desirable but not required
Education and Experience:
● Bachelor's degree in Education or related field. Master’s degree in TESOL or Multilingual Education
preferred.
● Valid State Teaching License with an English as a Second Language (ESL) #1395 or Bilingual-Bicultural
#1023 endorsement.
