Description
The Lab Supervisor oversees all daily operations of the hospital laboratory, including scheduling, staff supervision, quality control, and regulatory compliance. This role ensures safe, efficient, and accurate specimen handling, test analysis, and reporting; supports lab staff in meeting hospital and accreditation standards; and assists with departmental planning, process improvement, and education.
Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biology, or related field required; Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Technologist (MT/MLS) certification required.

Minimum three years’ clinical laboratory experience, including supervisory or lead duties.

In-depth knowledge of laboratory methods, equipment, and quality controls.

Familiarity with CAP, CLIA, COLA, Joint Commission, and other regulatory/accreditation standards.

Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.

Proficient with laboratory information systems (LIS), computers, and standard office software.
Summary

Supervise daily workflow and scheduling of laboratory staff for all shifts and functions.

Ensure proper specimen collection, processing, analysis, and reporting according to established protocols.

Maintain compliance with all laboratory regulations, accreditation requirements, and hospital policies.

Conduct and document quality control, proficiency testing, and preventative maintenance.

Review and verify laboratory test results for accuracy and clinical relevance; ensure timely reporting.

Train, mentor, and evaluate laboratory staff and students; provide ongoing education on procedures and safety.

Assist manager in budgeting, supply inventory, and equipment acquisition/maintenance.

Investigate and resolve errors, complaints, and performance issues promptly.

Prepare, update, and audit standard operating procedures, policies, and technical manuals.

Communicate with medical staff, nursing, patients, and other departments to facilitate laboratory services.

Oversee laboratory data entry into LIS/EHR and ensure records are maintained to privacy and retention standards.

Lead initiatives to improve lab workflow, patient safety, service quality, and regulatory readiness.

Stay current with advances in lab technology, methodology, and compliance standards.
