Mechanical Design Engineer (Enclosure Manufacturing)
The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and documentation of mechanical enclosures and components used in electrical control panels and automation systems.
The role involves creating detailed 3D models, engineering drawings, and fabrication layouts while ensuring all designs meet industry standards, safety requirements, and client specifications. The engineer will also collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure designs are accurate, manufacturable, structurally sound, and cost-effective.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design & Development
- Design and develop sheet metal enclosures, cabinets, and mechanical structures for electrical and electronic systems.
- Create detailed 3D models, assembly drawings, and fabrication drawings using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
- Ensure designs meet standards for IP protection, ventilation, cooling, and cable management.
- Incorporate ergonomics, aesthetics, and ease of manufacturing in design.
- Documentation & Standards
- Prepare Bill of Materials (BOM), fabrication drawings, and technical documentation.
- Ensure all designs comply with relevant standards (IEC, IS, UL, etc.) and company guidelines.
- Maintain design version control and support change management processes.
- Cross-functional Coordination
- Work closely with electrical, production, purchase, and quality teams to finalize enclosure designs.
- Support vendors and fabricators during prototype and production stages.
- Participate in design reviews and incorporate feedback for continuous improvement.
- Testing & Validation
- Support prototype testing, fitment checks, and enclosure validation activities.
- Identify and resolve design issues related to material strength, heat dissipation, or assembly.
- Continuous Improvement
- Evaluate existing designs for cost reduction, ease of manufacturing, and performance enhancement.
- Keep updated with new materials, manufacturing methods, and CAD tools.
Skills & Competencies Required:
- Proficiency in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent 3D CAD software.
- Strong knowledge of sheet metal design, fabrication, and mechanical assembly.
- Understanding of thermal management, IP protection levels, and ergonomic design.
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as laser cutting, bending, welding, and powder coating.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
Education & Experience:
- Qualification: Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience: 2–5 years of relevant experience in mechanical enclosure design (preferably in electrical / automation / control panel industry).
