Job Description
Mechanical Design - Engineer
We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer with 3–7 years of experience to support design and development of automated test fixtures, mechanical assemblies, enclosures, alignment mechanisms, and operator-safe structures used in manufacturing environments for testing PCBAs and assembled electronic products.
This role focuses on practical mechanical development for production test fixtures, including fixture structure, DUT location, clamping, lid mechanisms, guarding, ergonomics, changeover concepts, and prototype support. The engineer will work closely with hardware and firmware teams to help develop manufacturable, durable, operator-friendly, and error-proof fixture systems, and support prototype build, testing, validation, and documentation.
Key Responsibilities
Fixture Mechanical Design & Development
- Create design and development of mechanical structures for functional test fixtures, interface nests, quick-change heads, lids, guards, mounting systems, and support brackets.
- Create 3D CAD models, detailed 2D drawings, BOMs, and assembly documentation for prototype and production-ready fixture builds.
- Design for repeatable DUT positioning, alignment, connector engagement, probe access, and operator ease of use.
- Support compact, factory-suitable designs aligned to footprint, weight, durability, and ergonomics requirements.
Error-Proofing, Ergonomics & Operator Safety
- Support mechanical poka-yoke features that prevent incorrect part loading, incorrect orientation, incomplete closure, or unsafe operation.
- Design guarded structures, interlocked lid accommodations, cable protection, indicator mounting, label placement, and other features that improve usability and safety.
- Support single-hand lid closure concepts, service access, and operator-friendly interactions.
- Contribute to designs that help reduce operator dependence and improve consistency.
Prototyping, Fixture Build & Validation Support
- Support prototype fabrication using 3D printing, machined parts, sheet metal parts, and simple fabricated assemblies.
- Work with internal shop resources and external vendors for prototype parts, fixture fabrication, and design refinements.
- Assist in fixture assembly, fit-checks, alignment validation, wear observations, and iteration during debug and pilot runs.
- Support mechanical validation for durability, repeatability, alignment, connector life, lid operation, and ease of changeover.
Cross-Functional Mechanical Integration
- Collaborate with hardware engineers on PCB access, wiring paths, connector clearances, probe access, and mounting of electronics and instrumentation.
- Collaborate with firmware and manufacturing teams on operator workflow, fixture usability, indication placement, and service access.
- Support packaging and routing of cables, sensors, scanners, indicators, pneumatic or electromechanical actuation elements if used in the fixture.
Documentation & Release Support
- Prepare manufacturing-ready drawings with dimensions, tolerances, notes, views, and sections.
- Maintain CAD data, revision history, BOMs, and assembly instructions.
- Support release documentation, fixture assembly instructions, and handoff of final design files.
Qualifications
- Experience: 3-7 years in mechanical design, fixture design, tooling, product development, or related mechanical engineering work.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- Strong experience with SolidWorks 3D CAD modelling and 2D drawing creation.
- Hands-on exposure to machined parts, sheet metal parts, fabricated assemblies, prototype development, and fixture build support.
- Understanding of tolerance, fit, alignment, ergonomics, DFM/DFA, and practical assembly considerations.
- Exposure to electromechanical packaging, wiring accommodation, and manufacturing support preferred.
- Strong learning mindset, problem-solving ability, and willingness to work hands-on during prototype and pilot builds.
- Good communication and collaboration skills in cross-functional engineering teams.
Tech Stack & Tools
- CAD / PLM: SolidWorks (must), SolidWorks PDM, Creo
- Documentation / ERP: Standard engineering documentation and release control tools
- Prototype & Shop Tools: 3D printers, CNC support, drill press, sheet metal fabrication support, basic fixture assembly tools
- Validation Support: Mechanical fit-check tools, gauges, durability test setups, prototype evaluation tools
- Product Domains: Test fixtures, nests, guards, mounting structures, operator interfaces, quick-change mechanical systems, light industrial electromechanical assemblies
