Mechanical Design Engineer — Robotics
We're looking for someone who can take a rough idea and turn it into a manufacturable, tolerance-correct mechanical assembly — not just a visually appealing CAD model.
Note: Fusion 360 proficiency is mandatory for this role. If you don't have hands-on, production-level experience in Fusion 360, please don't apply — this isn't a "willing to learn" requirement, it's a day-one requirement.
The Role
Design mechanical structures, enclosures, and moving assemblies for our robotics platforms — from concept sketch to production-ready part — entirely within Fusion 360. You'll own design work across multiple product lines end-to-end, translating functional requirements (motion, load, wiring, assembly) into real geometry that survives manufacturing, tolerancing, and field use. You'll also be expected to catch DFM/DFA issues before they hit the shop floor and work directly with vendors during tooling and production ramp-up.
Mandatory Skills
- Deep, hands-on proficiency in Fusion 360 — this is non-negotiable. You should be comfortable with: Parametric modeling and complex feature trees
- Multi-component assemblies with joints and motion studies
- Sheet metal design and flat pattern outputs
- Surface modeling for curved/organic geometry
- Drawing generation (GD&T, tolerances, BOM)
- Configurations/design variations for iterative product development
- 2+ years of professional experience designing mechanical parts and assemblies that have gone into actual production (not just prototypes), primarily using Fusion 360.
- Ability to design complex structures and curved/organic surfaces for robotic platforms (chassis, limbs, housings, articulated joints).
- Solid understanding of GD&T and tolerance stacking — knowing what tolerance a part actually needs and why, and being able to defend that decision.
- Working knowledge of manufacturing processes relevant to DFM: injection molding (draft angles, wall thickness, ribs, gate/parting lines), sheet metal, 3D printing (FDM/SLA), and CNC machining.
- Ability to design for assembly (DFA) — fasteners, snap-fits, press-fits, service access.
- Comfortable producing manufacturing-ready drawings (dimensions, tolerances, surface finish, BOM) with no hand-holding.
- Experience working directly with vendors/machine shops/molders to troubleshoot manufacturing issues.

- A Fusion 360 project you designed end-to-end — ideally something with moving parts, an enclosure, or a curved/complex surface — that you can open and modify live during the interview. We will ask you to make changes on the spot.
- A part or assembly you designed that went into actual production (3D printed, molded, machined, or sheet metal) — with photos and, ideally, details of how the design evolved through manufacturing feedback or field failures.
Candidates must be prepared to walk through design decisions — why a wall thickness, a tolerance, a draft angle, a joint type — during the interview, including tradeoffs you made under cost, timeline, or manufacturing constraints.
Bonus Skills
- Injection mold design / mold flow understanding (parting lines, ejector pins, shrinkage).
- FEA / simulation experience (stress, motion, thermal) — Fusion 360 simulation workspace experience is a strong plus.
- Experience designing for robotics specifically — actuator mounts, gear trains, linkages, cable routing.
- Exposure to other CAD tools (SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo) — but Fusion 360 remains our primary platform.
- Experience mentoring junior engineers or interns.
- Rapid prototyping mindset — iterating physical prototypes quickly rather than over-polishing a single CAD file.

- You don't have real, hands-on Fusion 360 experience — we are not looking for someone to learn it on the job.
- Your CAD experience is mostly coursework assemblies or tutorial-based projects with limited real manufacturing consideration.
- You can model geometry but don't understand why a tolerance, material, or process was chosen.
- You've never taken a design through an actual production run, or worked with a vendor to resolve manufacturing issues.
- You're looking for a pure rendering/visualization role with no interest in DFM or how the part actually gets made.
