The Medical Assistant for General Surgery provides clinical and administrative support to the general surgeon and surgical team. This role is responsible for assisting with patient care before, during, and after surgical visits, preparing patients for procedures, maintaining accurate medical records, and ensuring efficient clinic workflow while delivering compassionate, high-quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Duties:
- Prepare patients for examination, procedures, and minor in-office surgeries.
- Take and record vital signs, medical histories, and chief complaints.
- Assist the general surgeon during examinations and minor procedures (e.g., wound care, biopsies, suturing, drain removal).
- Perform dressing changes, suture/staple removal, and post-operative wound care.
- Prepare exam rooms, sterilize instruments, and maintain surgical supplies.
- Administer medications and injections as directed and within scope of practice.
- Educate patients and families on pre-operative and post-operative care instructions.
- Monitor patients for signs of complications and report concerns promptly.
Administrative Duties:
- Schedule office visits, pre-op appointments, post-op follow-ups, procedures and surgeries.
- Document patient information accurately in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Handle phone calls: triage patient concerns, relay messages, and provide instructions.
- Assist with referrals, prior authorizations, and insurance verifications.
- Maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Order and restock medical and surgical supplies as needed.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
- Current Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, or equivalent preferred).
- Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and basic surgical procedures.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Prior experience in a surgical or general surgery practice.
- Experience with EHR systems.
- Familiarity with sterile technique and post-operative care.
