About Aruliden & Material

Aruliden is an award-winning studio that builds purpose-driven brands, products, and experiences. A multi-disciplinary team of industrial designers, 2D designers, and strategists, we work together to bring brands to life, whether crafting their strategic DNA, developing a graphic identity, or developing their physical and digital products. We’ve delivered design solutions for: Verizon, Whoop, Google, Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein, Fenty, Cecred, AG1, Seed, Movado, Bulgari, Supergoop, Simkhai, the MoMA store, Backdrop, Merit, and many more clients across a diverse range of sectors.

Aruliden is the design & innovation studio within Material, a global integrated marketing services company that specializes in uncovering deep, data-driven insights in order to create experiences for clients, transforming relationships between businesses and the people they serve.

About The Internship

This internship program is a paid opportunity to build skills & gain exposure to a wide variety of clients in a fast-paced agency setting.

The intern will work alongside staff designers on 2+ client projects, taking part in design and development conversations internally and with clients. They’ll have consistent opportunities to learn from more senior design staff and contribute their own creative thinking as integrated members of the team.

Interns also complete a non-client capstone project, taking advantage of team resources to craft a self-directed concept design based on a set theme. This project is presented to the team in an informal session that celebrates their work and marks the close of their internship experience.

We’re looking for someone with a passion for design, impeccable taste, a compelling skill set, and promising growth potential.

The ideal candidate is driven and eager to learn, with diverse interests and a willingness to take part in any stage of physical product design and development. Candidates should be eternally-curious, looking to push the limits of their skills or research new tools and techniques. They should have their finger on the pulse of trends and developments in design, technology, arts, and culture.

Candidates should demonstrate strong foundational skills and a familiarity with the basics of manufacturing. Preference will be given to candidates that already demonstrate a capacity for strategic thinking, clear storytelling, thoughtful ideation, excellent 3D modeling and rendering, and physical prototyping.

Interns are not expected to manage client communications, however they should expect some amount of direct client exposure, and should exhibit professionalism and courtesy in all communications.

We’re looking for highly creative and strategic thinkers and makers – we listen, learn, reinvent, design and make stuff, come join us!

As an Industrial Design Intern you will:

Contribute to projects:

  • Contribute to the full design process including strategic thinking, inspiration-gathering, ideation, 3D modeling, physical prototyping, visual rendering, design for manufacturing, and presentation crafting
  • Take part in 2+ projects which may range from quick sprints to large, complex initiatives
  • Quickly surface any questions, challenges, or ambiguities to senior staff or Project Managers
  • Continuously improve your hard and soft skills
  • Maintain high quality standards for design, ensuring the work is strategic, aesthetically appealing, improves the experience of users, and supports business goals
  • Be a champion for ethics in design with an interest in social & environmental principles

Be a core presence on the team:

  • Help to maintain team culture, embracing the positive attitude and low-ego zone we’re proud to have cultivated
  • Pitch in with voluntary housekeeping, whether cleaning up digital files or tidying around the office
  • Suggest improvements to workflow or equipment

About You

  • Strong portfolio demonstrating exceptional taste, ideation, and execution
  • Degree in Industrial Design or graduation date within this year, or equivalent experience
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Some familiarity with the basics of prototyping & manufacturing
  • Concept, sketching, and rendering skills
  • Proficiency in Keyshot
  • Proficiency in Solidworks (preferred) and/or other 3D CAD packages (Rhino, Fusion, Alias, etc.)
  • Proficiency in basic Adobe Creative Suite software
  • Familiarity with Figma a plus
  • Familiarity with web-based calendars & video conference a plus
  • Located in NYC or surrounding areas, or willing to relocate
