Substitute Custodian
DESCRIPTION:
• Assists the head custodian and performs a variety of tasks involving general care of building and grounds; the
work involves cleaning, repairing and maintenance.
• Primary responsibility is to ensure students and staff have a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient
place in which to learn, play, work and develop.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Perform a competent level of general custodian services in keeping assigned building areas clean and orderly.
• Use power equipment and hand tools such as broom, mop, squeegee, buffer, polisher and vacuum required for
cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets and furniture.
• Keep building and premises, including sidewalks, driveway and play areas neat and clean.
• Regulate heat, ventilation and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and
ensure economical usage of fuel, water and electricity.
• Set up and/or remove furniture and equipment within building as required for various events and activities and
as directed by building principal.
• Shovel, plow and sand walks, driveways, parking area and steps, as appropriate.
• Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and panic bolts are working properly during the hours of
building occupancy.
• Sweep and vacuum classrooms daily and dust furniture.
• Scrub, hose down or mop, and disinfect toilet floors daily, clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
• Wash all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary.
• Keep grounds free from rubbish.
• Perform such yard keep chores as grass cutting, tree trimming etc.
• Periodically clean all whiteboards.
• Make such minor building repairs as is capable of.
• Report major repairs needed promptly to head custodian and Director of Operations
• Report immediately to the building principal any damage to school property.
• May assume responsibility for opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before
leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights except those left on for safety reasons, are turned
off.
EQUIPMENT USED:
• Office equipment and tools: personal computer, printer, calculator, multi-line phone system, copier and fax
machine
• Shop equipment and tools: ladder scaffold, small hand and power tools (screwdrivers, drills, wrenches, hammers,
sockets, pliers, crimpers, wire cutters, etc.)
• Custodial equipment: electric buffer, stripper, wet and dry vacuum cleaner, shampooer, mop with manual ringer
and electric scrubbing machine
• Grounds equipment: gas powered lawn mower, weed trimmer, blower, and garden, and hand tools
• Communication equipment: radio communication equipment or cell phone.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
• Exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.)
• Work: on slippery and/or uneven surfaces
RATE OF PAY: $21.25 Per hour
BENEFITS: Not benefit eligible
