HEAD CUSTODIAN
Description:
The Head Custodian provides leadership for the building custodial staff and performs a variety of tasks
involving general care of building and grounds; the work involves cleaning, repairing and maintenance.
Primary responsibility is to ensure students and staff has a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient
place in which to learn, play, work and develop.
Qualifications
• High school Graduate (GED) and three years’ prior custodial experience with increasing levels of
responsibilities, preferably in school and/or institutional setting or seven years’ prior custodial
experience with increasing levels of responsibilities, preferably in school and/or institutional
setting,
• Written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to master computer systems such as word, outlook, excel.
• Ability to manage a budget and order products.
• Knowledge of safety measures regarding use of standard chemicals related to cleaning activity is
required.
• Demonstrated job knowledge, leadership ability.
• Perform basic math to calculate accurate dilution of cleaning agents.
• Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
• Work with frequent interruptions.
• Experience with mowers and other yard equipment.
• Bus Driver Certified (CDL w/passenger endorsement) or willing and able to be certified.
• Standing, walking, climbing (stairs, ladder, scaffold, or ramps), stooping, kneeling, crouching,
crawling, pulling, pushing, reaching, hand-wrist and elbow motion and carrying, lifting, lowering
of 1 – 20 pounds, occasional: carrying, lifting, and lowering of 21-60 pounds, and pushing or
pulling 61-130 pounds using a dolly or hand cart, intermittent: reaching above shoulder level,
climbing stairs, ladders or ramps to perform work at heights.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Work as lead custodian for the building.
• Ensure that the building is properly heated and ventilated, free of safety hazards, clean and in good
repair.
• Ensure that a clean and sanitary environment is maintained in all classrooms, offices, restrooms,
athletic/P.E. areas including outside areas and all other rooms/facilities at assigned locations.
• Use power equipment and hand tools such as broom, mop, squeegee, buffer, polisher and vacuum
required for cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets and furniture.
• Shovel, plow and sand walks, driveways, parking area and steps, as appropriate.
• Sweep and vacuum classrooms daily and dust furniture.
• Scrub, hose down or mop, and disinfect toilet floors daily, clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking
fountains daily.

• Wash all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year and more frequently if
necessary.
• Keep grounds free from rubbish.
• Periodically clean all whiteboards.
• Ensure that building is opened and secured properly and timely.
• Ensure that each clock in the building is set for the correct time.
• Ensure that the grounds are kept free of litter and hazardous elements and the lawns are mowed
and watered as necessary.
• Work with the Director of Operations in planning and organizing custodial services.
• Coordinate with the Director of Operations to prepare a work schedule for each custodial
employee.
• Assist in the cafeteria as needed.
• Assist grounds staff with mowing, weeding, planting and other ground work.
• Report to Director of Operations any major repairs as needed. Ensure that minor repairs are
performed including changing light bulbs, etc.
• Prepare work orders and supply requisitions.
• Arrange furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for
meetings, classroom activities and events (i.e., regular school, community education, special
events)
• Live within 30 minutes of school to respond to emergency calls.
• Make such minor building repairs as is capable of.
• Remain on the premises during school and non-school hours when the use of the building has been
authorized and attendance is required by building principal.
• Keep an inventory of supplies, equipment and requisition for needed replacements in advance so
that supplies arrive in time as to not hinder the custodial duties.
• Conduct an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair.
• Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste.
• Conduct periodic inspection of all electrical installations in the building to ensure their safe
condition.
• Supervise playgrounds, parking lots, commons, and halls utilizing good judgment.
• Enforce safety regulations on campus and in building.
• Enforce school discipline policies and procedures.
• Assist with lunch supervision.
• Drive school bus as an emergency sub.
• Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
EQUIPMENT USED:
• Office equipment and tools: personal computer, printer, calculator, multi-line phone system,
copier and fax machine
• Shop equipment and tools: ladder scaffold, small hand and power tools (screwdrivers, drills,
wrenches, hammers, sockets, pliers, crimpers, wire cutters, etc.)
• Custodial equipment: electric buffer, stripper, wet and dry vacuum cleaner, shampooer, mop with
manual ringer and electric scrubbing machine
• Grounds equipment: gas powered lawn mower, weed trimmer, blower, and garden and hand
tools
• Communication equipment: radio communication equipment or cell phone

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
• Exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.)
• Work: on slippery and/or uneven surfaces

Director of Operations (primary), building principal
Salary & Benefits:
Salary: 260 days per year, 40 hours per week, $24.02 - $28.64 per hour, DOE
Benefits: Retirement, medical, dental, vision, sick leave, personal leave and vacation.
