Job Description
Job Title: Manager – Technical Design (Apparel – Walmart)
Location: Bangalore, India
Experience: 15–20 years (relevant experience in apparel technical design)

About the role We are seeking an experienced Technical Design (TD) Manager to lead technical design and quality assurance for apparel programs serving Walmart. The role bridges design, development, production and quality teams to ensure garments meet fit, construction, quality and retailer specifications. The Manager – TD will own tech-pack approvals, fit and construction reviews, supplier liaison, and quality verification across sample and production stages.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead review and approval of initial tech packs in collaboration with design and product development teams.
- Evaluate patterns and prototype garments; provide detailed fit and construction feedback to designers and suppliers.
- Define and enforce size, fit and measurement standards for each product category; maintain size spec libraries.
- Conduct sample and production inspections to identify and resolve quality issues (fabric defects, color matching, stitching, dimensional variance, trims and labeling).
- Approve fabric swatches, trims and materials ensuring consistency with design intent and performance requirements.
- Create and maintain clear, comprehensive documentation of quality standards, test methods, measurement tolerances and corrective-action procedures.
- Provide actionable recommendations and follow-up to resolve quality non-conformances; drive corrective and preventive actions with suppliers.
- Liaise closely with suppliers to ensure correct material selection, construction methods and compliance with brand/retailer requirements.
- Work with production/operations teams to optimize processes, reduce defects and improve yield.
- Coordinate with sourcing, merchandising, logistics and compliance teams to proactively resolve issues across the production cycle.
- Mentor and guide junior TD resources; represent the TD function in cross-functional reviews, fit sessions and client meetings.
Required qualifications & experience:
- Degree/Diploma in Fashion, Textile Engineering, Apparel Technology, or related field (BE/B.Tech / Diploma in Fashion acceptable).
- 18–20 years of hands-on experience in apparel technical design, quality assurance or garment development—preferably with experience on Walmart / large retailer programs.
- Strong technical knowledge of garment construction, sewing processes, textiles and fabric performance.
- Proven pattern knowledge and practical experience with Optitex (or equivalent pattern/CAD systems) for pattern review and grading.
- Demonstrated experience creating and managing tech packs, size specs and measurement systems.
- Strong understanding of apparel quality control procedures, inspection protocols and testing methods.
- Excellent attention to detail with a consistent ability to detect and diagnose garment construction and fit issues.
- Proficient with Microsoft Outlook, Teams and PowerPoint; familiarity with other PLM/CAD tools is a plus.
- Strong communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills; able to build productive working relationships with internal teams and external suppliers.
- Experience working in or with agencies, liaison offices or buying houses is preferred.
Desirable:
- Prior exposure to Walmart quality/specification standards and compliance processes.
- Experience managing multiple product categories and complex vendor networks.
- Track record of driving process improvements that reduce defects and cost.
Working relationships:
- Reports to: Head of Technical / Head of QA / Program Lead (as per organizational structure)
- Regular interaction with: Design, Merchandising, Sourcing, Production, QA, Suppliers and Logistics teams; direct vendor engagement and client-facing meetings as required.
Desired Candidate Profile
- Education: BE/B. Tech /Diploma in Fashions
- In-depth knowledge of garment construction, textiles, and fabric properties.
- TD with good pattern knowledge together with Opti Tex use
- Strong understanding of quality control procedures and standards for apparel production.
- Excellent attention to detail with the ability to detect flaws in garment construction.
- Familiarity with CAD software and tech pack creation.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to build strong relationships with cross-functional teams and communicate effectively with internal and external parties.
- Well-versed with MS team applications like Outlook and PowerPoint
