Role Summary:
Responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and optimizing the performance and capacity of IBM mainframe (z/OS) systems to ensure high availability, stability, and cost‑efficient operation of business‑critical workloads.
Key responsibilities
- Monitor mainframe system performance (CPU, memory, DASD, I/O, network, workload distribution) using SMF/RMF and real‑time tools (OMEGAMON, Mainview, SYSVIEW, etc.).
- Analyze performance metrics, identify bottlenecks, and recommend tuning actions across z/OS, CICS, DB2, IMS and other subsystems.
- Perform capacity planning, trending, and forecasting for mainframe resources, producing regular reports and recommendations for future growth.
- Configure and maintain Workload Manager (WLM) policies, service classes, and goals to meet SLAs and optimize MIPS/MSU utilization.
- Conduct health checks, performance baselining, and impact analysis for new applications, releases, and infrastructure changes.
- Support performance testing cycles, interpret results, and collaborate with infrastructure and application teams to resolve issues.
- Automate data collection and reporting using SAS/MXG, REXX, or similar scripting to process SMF/RMF and tool outputs.
- Participate in incident and problem management bridges for performance‑related production issues, including root cause analysis and remediation.
- Contribute to mainframe cost‑optimization initiatives (MIPS reduction, capping strategies, LPAR optimization).
- Maintain documentation of performance baselines, standards, procedures, and tuning changes.
Required skills and experience
- 6–8 years of hands‑on experience in mainframe system performance, capacity management, or systems programming (z/OS environment).
- Strong knowledge of IBM z/OS internals, LPAR concepts, WLM, and major subsystems (CICS, DB2, IMS, MQ).
- Experience with performance and monitoring tools such as OMEGAMON, Mainview, SYSVIEW, RMF/SMF, Strobe, IzPCA, or equivalent.
- Proven expertise in performance analysis, tuning, and capacity planning for large, high‑availability mainframe environments.
- Scripting/programming skills (SAS/MXG, REXX, CLIST, or similar) for automation and custom reporting.
- Good understanding of infrastructure components (DASD storage, I/O configuration, network, security) and their impact on system performance.
- Excellent analytical, documentation, and communication skills, with ability to work closely with cross‑functional IT and business teams.
