Role Overview: Responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and optimizing the performance of mainframe-based applications. Works closely with development and operations teams to identify bottlenecks and drive performance improvements across batch and online workloads.
Key Responsibilities:
- Analyze and tune CICS, IMS, DB2, and batch application performance on IBM Z mainframe environments
- Conduct capacity planning and workload analysis for critical business applications
- Identify application-level CPU, I/O, and memory inefficiencies using tools like RMF, SMF, OMEGAMON, and Strobe
- Collaborate with application developers to review and optimize COBOL, PL/I, and JCL code for performance
- Define and track SLAs and performance KPIs for mainframe applications
- Perform root cause analysis (RCA) on performance incidents and implement corrective actions
- Participate in performance testing cycles and provide recommendations before production releases
- Document performance baselines, findings, and tuning recommendations
Required Skills:
- 6–8 years of experience in mainframe application performance engineering
- Strong proficiency in CICS, IMS, DB2 performance tuning
- Hands-on experience with SMF records, RMF, and performance monitoring tools (OMEGAMON, Strobe, CA SYSVIEW)
- Knowledge of COBOL, JCL, and batch job optimization
- Experience with Workload Manager (WLM) and service class definitions
- Familiarity with z/OS internals and storage management
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Good to Have:
- IBM Certified System Administrator – z/OS
- Experience with DevOps practices on mainframe (zDevOps)
- Exposure to zIIP offloading strategies
