POSITION TITLE: 2 Billion Trees Summer Intern

DEPARTMENT: Lands and Environment

SALARY RANGE: Starting at $39,000.00 Per Annum ($20 hourly)

POSITION TYPE: Full Time, Temporary (May 2025 – August 2025)

LOCATION: Saskatoon

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Climate Change Program Manager

Brief Overview

The Métis Nation–Saskatchewan 2 Billion Trees program aims to encourage and advance tree planting in Saskatchewan. New planting efforts being pursed through this program will contribute to the restoration of habitat and provide a multitude of other social, cultural, environmental and economic benefits.

Under the general supervision of the Climate Change Program Coordinator, the Summer Intern will directly assist with the planting of 5,000 trees on the festival grounds at the Batoche National Historic Site. Work activities include site preparation, tree planting and ongoing post-planting care and maintenance. This is an exciting opportunity to learn about horticulture, climate action, and Métis culture while gaining practical experience in the field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the planting of 5,000 seedlings at the Batoche National Historic Site.
  • Unload seedlings from transportation vehicles and store them in the specified location.
  • General seedling handling and care.
  • Preparing the planting site.
  • Tree quality and spacing inspection.
  • Regular monitoring and watering of the trees before and after planting.
  • Usage, cleaning and maintenance of various types of tools and equipment.
  • Reporting any issues of concern to the supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Climate Change Program Manager and/or Climate Change Program Coordinator.

Knowledge And Skills

  • Be physically fit and willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • A good work ethic, positive attitude and willingness to contribute to a team environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and take directions from supervisors.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Efficient and effective while performing tasks.
  • Basic knowledge of tree species and planting techniques is considered an asset.

Qualifications

  • High school or post-secondary student (preferably in environmental science, Indigenous studies, or a related field).
  • Previous experience working in an environmental capacity would be considered an asset.

  • Valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and access reliable transportation
