PCU/Cardiac Tele Unit (Part-time, Day Shift)
Job Summary: The Patient Care Technician is a multi-faceted position incorporating the roles of Patient Care Assistant (PCA), Nursing Unit Secretary (NUS) and Telemetry Technician (TT). Provides and documents care to patients under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN), ensuring a safe, comfortable, and confidential environment. Completes order and data entry into the electronic medical record (EMR) as applicable. Records and calculates all necessary parameters; interprets electrocardiogram (EKG) tracings for diagnostic purposes; monitors and integrates cardiac rhythms as appropriate. Acts as a member of the health care team at all times to ensure appropriate resources to all internal and external customers; maintains a secure and trusting environment, ensures the customer's right to privacy and dignity. Provides safe, cost effective, competent, age and population specific, culturally sensitive, direct, basic patient care throughout hospitalization and in preparation for discharge according to established hospital and professional standards, and is responsible and accountable for this care. Performs other duties as needed.
Education and Experience: Successful completion of an approved Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) program or proof of satisfactory completion of Fundamentals of Nursing for Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). Minimum of six months experience as a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) in area of specialty or an appropriate equivalent or six months experience as Nursing Unit Secretary in related field required. Minimum one year experience as Telemetry Technician in related field preferred. Completion of Basic Arrythmia Recognition Training (BART) or BART Challenge Exam.
Knowledge and Skills: Speaks and reads English at a level that is sufficient to satisfactorily perform the essential functions of the position. Interpersonal skills to effectively work with peers and patients. Exemplary customer service skills - in person, answering telephones and call lights. Understands basic documentation via Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Ability to use equipment appropriate for role and patient care. Basic personal computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Windows, Office, internet, timekeeping, e-mail). Able to communicate effectively in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; work well under pressure; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail. Able to distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place and patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch.
Licensures and Certifications: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association required. Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification preferred.
