About The Role
The Linux System Administrator at DefinitionIT will play a crucial role in supporting our clients' Linux server environments. This is a part-time contractor role designed for professionals with extensive hands-on experience in Linux system management. The successful candidate will provide remote support primarily during Canada EST business hours, with flexibility for after-hours support based on client requirements. The role involves maintaining and optimizing Linux servers, ensuring security compliance, and supporting cloud integrations, particularly with AWS. This position offers an excellent opportunity for experienced Linux administrators seeking flexible work arrangements and exposure to diverse IT environments, including cloud technologies.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of 4 to 7 years of comprehensive Linux system administration experience. They should have a deep understanding of Linux operating systems, including RHEL, CentOS, and Ubuntu, with proven capabilities in configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting these environments. Strong knowledge of filesystems, permissions, networking, and security protocols is essential. Experience with SSL certificates, encryption, backup solutions, and monitoring tools is also required. Excellent communication skills and the ability to produce detailed documentation are critical for success in this role. Familiarity with cloud platforms, especially AWS, is considered an added advantage, along with experience supporting hybrid cloud and on-premises environments.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of this role include installing, configuring, and patching Linux servers to ensure optimal performance and security. The administrator will perform routine health checks and monitor system health to proactively identify and resolve issues, minimizing downtime. Managing disk utilization, mount points, and file systems will be part of daily tasks. Establishing and maintaining local repositories for OS patching and package deployment is vital for operational efficiency. The role also involves configuring and managing web servers, implementing SSL certificates, and applying Linux hardening best practices to enhance security. User administration, permissions management, and access control are key components of the position. Supporting data migrations with minimal disruption, collaborating with backup teams for backup and recovery strategies, and supporting capacity planning initiatives are also essential. Additionally, the administrator will provide technical support during application deployments and troubleshooting, while maintaining comprehensive operational documentation and runbooks.
