About The Role
The Linux System Administrator at DefinitionIT will play a critical role in maintaining and supporting our clients' Linux server environments. This is a part-time contractor position designed for professionals who excel in managing Linux systems independently and efficiently. The role involves providing hands-on support for production servers, ensuring optimal performance, security, and reliability. The successful candidate will work remotely from India, supporting clients primarily during Canada EST business hours, with flexibility for after-hours support as needed. Exposure to AWS cloud environments is considered an added advantage, enabling the administrator to support hybrid cloud scenarios and cloud-specific configurations. This position offers a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver seamless IT operations and support.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of 4 to 7 years of hands-on experience in Linux system administration. Strong knowledge of Linux operating systems such as RHEL, CentOS, and Ubuntu is essential, along with expertise in filesystems, permissions, networking, and troubleshooting. Candidates should have proven experience supporting production environments independently, demonstrating the ability to resolve complex issues efficiently. Familiarity with SSL certificates, encryption techniques, backup strategies, and monitoring tools is required. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are necessary for effective documentation and collaboration with technical teams. A proactive approach to system health monitoring and incident resolution is vital for success in this role.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of the Linux System Administrator include installing, configuring, maintaining, and patching Linux servers (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu). Ensuring servers meet operational and security standards through routine health checks and security audits is a key aspect of the role. The administrator will configure and manage mount points, file systems, disk utilization, and local repositories to facilitate OS patching and package deployment. Managing web servers to optimize performance and availability, implementing SSL certificates, server/disk encryption, and applying Linux hardening best practices are also part of the duties. The role involves administering user permissions, sudo access, and access controls to maintain security integrity. Supporting data migrations with minimal disruption, collaborating with backup teams to implement and test backup and recovery strategies, and monitoring system health and performance are ongoing tasks. The administrator will support capacity planning, scalability initiatives, and provide technical support during deployments and troubleshooting. Maintaining operational documentation and runbooks to ensure operational continuity is also required.
