Description:
Adler Park Elementary (K - 5) School has an opening for an elementary 1:1 Paraeducator for the 2026-2027 school year. The pay rate is $20.72 per hour (ELS PARA or SUB) or $21.84 per hour with a PEL. Benefits include: medical, dental and life insurance, 2 personal days, and 12 sick days.
Qualifications:
Must possess current and valid ISBE licensure with a PEL, SUB or ELS-(PARA) Paraeducator, and be registered in Lake County.
Behavioral Support:
- Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) as directed by the teacher or behavior specialist.
- Support students in managing their behavior, emotions, and social interactions in various settings (classroom, recess, etc.).
- Assist with de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention as needed.
- Monitor and document student behavior, tracking progress and reporting to the appropriate staff.
Classroom Support:
- Provide one-on-one or small group support to students to reinforce learning.
- Assist in modifying instructional materials to meet the academic and behavioral needs of students.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
- Support students with organizational tasks, following schedules, and completing assignments.

Purpose: To assist special education students in their learning or personal care
activities and/or assist the special education teacher in the management of
the instructional program classroom.
Essential Functions and Performance Responsibilities: (These are intended only as illustrations of

work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
1. Plans with teacher(s) for activities of the day/week.
2. Assist with or adapts and/or prepares materials to be used in various classroom
activities.
3. Assumes arrival and dismissal responsibilities for individual students as needed.
4. Assists special education students with classroom learning center activities.
5. Assists classroom teacher(s) with special education students as requested and
approved by the student’s case manager.
6. Corrects class work, homework, workbooks, and tests as appropriate; collects data
for monitoring progress.
7. Works with children in small group activities to reinforce skills.
8. Assists with large group activities such as reading aloud, calendar time, snack
time, and storytelling, when appropriate and/or necessary
9. Discusses children’s progress and/or problems only with the student’s case
manager.
10. Maintains a positive and caring attitude using positive reinforcement appropriately,
including the implementation of a Behavior Intervention Plan.

11. Enforces discipline firmly and consistently and follows through with appropriate

12. Maintains confidentiality regarding programming, staff, and students and their
families.
13. Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom.
14. Assists special education teacher(s) with non-instructional duties such as making
visual aids and bulletin boards, typing, xeroxing, collating, etc., as appropriate.
15. Serves as a viable source of information and help to substitute teachers assigned in
the absence of a student’s special education teacher(s).
16. Participates in inservice training programs as assigned.
17. Assists students with personal care and/or toileting when necessary and
appropriate.
18. Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities assigned by an
administrator.
For Personal Care Assistant, in addition to the above:

1. Attend to the personal needs of disabled students including, but not limited to,
using prosthetic devices, dressing, eating, grooming, and bowel/bladder care.
Protect student privacy while doing so.
2. Secure or hoist students into necessary equipment.
3. Help students embark and debark from buses.
4. Escort or wheel students to various locations of school.
5. Assist educators and case managers in implementing classroom goals and
objectives.
6. Observe, record and chart behavior of students as needed.
7. Provide student assistance during evacuation drills (fire, tornado, crisis, etc.).
8. Maintain confidentiality of all student information.
9. Provide assistance with daily activities.
10. Assist certified staff with students’ daily/weekly behavior plan.
11. Assist with maintaining the safety of the class environment.
Provide 1-1 assistance with feeding, toileting, personal hygiene, and protecting student privacy
