Experience: 2–4 years
Positions available: 2
Employment type: Full-time
MSME Samadhaan / MSEFC experience is strongly preferred, not mandatory. If you have filed on the portal or appeared before a Facilitation Council, say so in your application — it will shape your level and your compensation.
About the RoleWe are hiring two Legal Counsels to handle MSME delayed payment claims and debt recovery for our clients, in a client-facing role.
You will work directly with the businesses we onboard onto our platform helping them get set up, structuring their invoices and payment terms so they hold up if payment is challenged, and building the documentation trail that makes money recoverable later. Most payment disputes are lost in loose paperwork long before anyone files anything. Your first job is to close those gaps.
When a payment does go bad, you act on it: legal notices, recovery strategy, and filing delayed payment applications under Sections 15–18 of the MSMED Act, 2006 on the MSME Samadhaan portal through objections, MSEFC hearings, and on to recovery.
You will spend most of your day talking to clients.
Who Tends to Do Well HereYou are likely a fit if you have done any of the following:
- MSME delayed payment work from any side — supplier, buyer, consulting, or advisory
- In-house legal or legal-collections at an NBFC, bank, fintech lender, or HFC
- In-house counsel at a manufacturing, trading, or B2B services company handling vendor and customer payment disputes, debit notes, and deduction claims
- A law firm practice acting for lenders or suppliers
- Commercial contracts work with real exposure to payment terms, interest, and dispute clauses
What we need you to already have is real experience chasing money: notices, defaulters, negotiation, and the judgement to tell a claim worth pursuing from one worth closing.
What You Will DoClient onboarding and advisory (most of your time)
- Onboard clients: understand their business, their customers, and how they invoice and get paid
- Capture the fundamentals — entity and Udyam registration status, MSME classification, contracts, standard payment terms
- Review invoice formats, POs, and customer contracts; flag what will not survive a payment dispute
- Advise on payment terms, interest, acceptance and deemed-acceptance language, dispute windows, and jurisdiction clauses
- Set up templates and a documentation discipline: delivery proof, GRNs, ledger reconciliation, written acknowledgements of debt
- Explain in plain language what MSME status gives a supplier — the 45-day payment window and the interest consequences for buyers who miss it
Recovery, when payment fails
- Draft and issue demand and legal notices with the correct basis, computation, and timelines
- Assess each defaulted receivable: documentation strength, limitation, counterparty solvency, realistic recoverability
- File delayed payment applications on the MSME Samadhaan portal under Sections 15–18 of the MSMED Act, 2006, and run the workflow through to award — filings, buyer objections, hearings
- Compute interest correctly under Section 16 (compound, monthly rests, three times the RBI bank rate)
- Negotiate directly with the buyer side to settle where cash now beats an award later
Client relationship
- Own your clients end-to-end — you are their point of contact, not a handoff in a queue
- Keep them updated proactively; set expectations honestly, including when a claim is weak
- Build the trust that gets you called before a client signs something, not after
Process
- Build the playbooks and templates that let this run consistently as we grow
- Feed what you learn from live disputes back into how clients are set up
Requirements- LL.B. from a recognised university
- 2–6 years of post-qualification experience in recovery, receivables, collections, or commercial legal work
- Practical grounding in debt recovery — you have chased money and know how defaulters behave
- Strong drafting: legal notices, applications, contract and invoice terms, settlement agreements
- Client-facing temperament — most of this role is advising, explaining, negotiating, and occasionally disappointing clients
- Able to explain legal positions in plain commercial terms to founders and finance teams
- Fluent spoken and written English and Hindi
- Organised and reliable on dates, follow-ups, and limitation across a portfolio
- Willing to travel for hearings, client meetings, and negotiations
Strongly preferred: MSME Samadhaan portal filings, MSEFC appearances, and working knowledge of the MSMED Act, 2006. Also useful: arbitration, IBC, SARFAESI or DRT exposure, a panel advocate network, multi-state experience.
Bar Council enrolment is welcome but not mandatory. Court appearances are handled by panel advocates.
What We Offer- Direct client ownership from month one, not years of doc review
- A new team where the process is still being written and your version of it can become the standard
