About the Department
We are seeking a dependable and safety-minded Seasonal Larviciding Assistant to assist our aerial and ground-based mosquito control operations during peak season, May through October. In this important field role, you will support helicopter and truck-based larviciding efforts by loading and refueling aircraft, transporting equipment and insecticide, maintaining heliports and landing zones, and assisting with ground treatments.
This position requires working outdoors in a physically active environment, Monday through Friday from 7:15 AM to 4:00 PM, with weekend work expected due to weather conditions and mosquito activity. Assistants are responsible for conducting pre-trip vehicle inspections, operating trucks, trailers, and mowing equipment, distributing mosquito fish for larval control, conducting landing rate counts, and ensuring all necessary supplies and materials are available to complete daily assignments. Ideal candidates are reliable, mechanically inclined, safety-conscious, and comfortable working in a field setting.
Position Duties
- Assist with refueling of helicopters
- Assist with loading insecticide onto helicopters
- Assist with truck-based larviciding applications
- Assist with trimming of inspection trails and helicopter landing zones throughout the county.
- Operates a variety of equipment and trailers to bring needed supplies, and insecticide, to helicopter loading sites throughout the county
- Operates a variety of equipment to mow the grass at the district’s heliports throughout the county
- Distributes mosquito fish around the county to control mosquito larvae
- Conduct Landing Rate Counts
- Conduct pre-trip vehicle inspection and ensure all necessary supplies and materials are present to complete trip
- Refuels and washes vehicle at the end of the shift
- Responsible for completing his/her timecard on a daily basis.
- Responsible for ensuring time card is correct and approved by 8:00 a.m. on payroll Mondays
- Documents and reports any mechanical problems with the truck in accordance with established procedures
- Responsible for wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Communicates with the public in a professional and courteous manner and refer all inquiries that are outside area of expertise to the appropriate person at the District
- Follow District Safety policies and procedures and comply with all local, state and federal regulations at all times
- Responsible for ensuring all assigned equipment is maintained and repaired as needed
- Must have regular and predictable attendance
- Other duties and projects assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be able to work a full-time schedule including working on weekends in May or June until October
- Must be able to safely operate a truck and trailer
- Must be able to operate a variety of small equipment, tools, and vehicles such as edgers, trimmers, weed eaters, lawn mowers, chain saws, zero-turn lawn mowers, tractors, etc.
- Must have basic math skills
- Must have basic computer skills and have the ability to learn and operate internal and web based programs including entering data into databases
- Must be able to read and understand chemical label instructions in English
- Must have a valid Class E driver’s license and a clean driving record

Physical Requirements: Moderate physical activity may be required including lifting, reaching for, pulling, carrying up to forty pounds, reaching and pulling with arms, stooping, bending frequently, standing, walking, sitting for long periods of time while driving a vehicle and climbing over and around natural obstacles and in and out of vehicles and other equipment. Must be able to use hands and fingers to type, and grip and operate a variety of hand tools and other equipment. Excellent vision, both close and distance, is frequently required.
Work Environment: The work environment varies but normally is outdoors or a vehicle and may include office buildings, mangroves, and fields. Regular exposure to all types of weather is required when the position is working outside, exposed to high temperatures and humidity, sun, rain, and wind. Frequent local travel is required. Noise level is usually low but occasional exposure to loud and moderate noise levels when around helicopters and a variety of motors and engines. Working with and around chemicals, which are stored, handled, applied/used and disposed of according to exact labeling instructions, is required frequently. Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, mud, fuel, fumes and insects is required.
