ABOUT DESIGNING ALLEY
Designing Alley is an engineering-first organization delivering advanced product development, industrial automation, and high-precision system integration. We operate across mechanical systems, embedded hardware, robotics, biomedical devices, and energy applications — spanning concept development, simulation-driven design, rapid prototyping, validation, and production transition.
We are a high-execution startup environment. Engineers at Designing Alley do not operate in silos — they own systems end-to-end, interact directly with clients, influence product architecture, and drive projects through to deployment. They are expected to take ownership of outcomes, not just tasks. We are expanding our core mechanical engineering team and seeking an Engineer capable of taking products from first principles to real-world deployment.
ROLE OVERVIEW
This is a hands-on role requiring active involvement in design, problem-solving, and engineering execution. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will take full technical ownership of product development programs across multiple domains. This is a leadership-track position for a professional who combines strong engineering fundamentals with execution discipline and startup agility. The role offers high autonomy, direct client exposure, and a clear pathway to build and lead engineering sub-teams.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Technical Ownership & System Design
- Lead the full mechanical design lifecycle from concept generation through production-ready detailing
- Develop system-level architecture for mechanical and electromechanical products
- Translate ambiguous or open-ended problem statements into structured, validated engineering solutions
- Ability to work with incomplete information and define structured engineering approaches
- Break down projects into structured engineering plans, including deliverables, milestones, and Go/No-Go checkpoints
- Define and plan design, simulation, prototyping, and manufacturing activities
- Estimate effort, timelines, and required technical resources
- Identify technical risks, dependencies, and uncertainties, and define mitigation strategies
- Manage design iterations, scope changes, and their impact on timelines and deliverables
- Establish and follow design review checkpoints and validation gates
- Perform analytical validation, including FEA, tolerance stack-up analysis, and structural/thermal assessments
- Ensure all designs meet performance, reliability, manufacturability, and safety requirements
2. Product Development & Prototyping
- Create high-precision 3D models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings to GD&T standards
- Oversee prototype build cycles, define test protocols, and drive iterative design refinement
- Plan and execute validation strategies, including simulation and physical testing
- Conduct design validation, DFMA, and root-cause analysis (RCFA) across failure modes
- Optimize designs for cost, weight, material efficiency, and production scalability
- Define prototyping strategies (PoC, functional, pre-production) and iteration cycles
- Work in iterative development cycles with continuous validation and refinement
- Manage successful transition of products from prototype through pilot manufacturing to mass production
3. Cross-Functional & Mechatronics Integration
- Collaborate closely with electronics, firmware, AI/ML, and manufacturing teams
- Design enclosures, housings, fixtures, and fully integrated mechatronic assemblies
- Support PCB-mechanical integration, thermal management, and EMI/EMC compliance considerations
- Interface directly with suppliers, tooling vendors, and contract manufacturers
- Ensure smooth integration between subsystems and external components
4. Engineering Leadership & Standards
- Allocate tasks and guide team members across project phases
- Track project execution against defined milestones and timelines
- Conduct design reviews, technical evaluations, and problem-solving discussions
- Mentor junior engineers and ensure high-quality engineering output
- Establish and enforce design standards, documentation protocols, and engineering practices
- Drive consistency, accountability, and execution discipline within the team
5. Documentation, Quality & Engineering Systems
- Maintain engineering documentation, version control, and design traceability
- Ensure adherence to quality standards, tolerances, and validation requirements
- Support creation of detailed drawings, BOMs, test reports, etc.
- Contribute to design libraries, knowledge systems, and reusable engineering practices
6. Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Participate in technical requirement discussions, workshops, and design reviews with clients
- Convert client needs and business goals into clear engineering specifications
- Present design approaches, trade-offs, and progress updates in a structured manner
- Manage expectations and ensure alignment between engineering and client requirements
7. Project Closure & Post-Deployment Support
- Ensure project readiness for deployment and handover
- Oversee creation of assembly manuals, service documentation, and technical handover documents
- Support project closure (technical + operational)
- Assist in post-deployment issue resolution and system performance stabilization
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- B.E. / B. Tech or M.E. / M. Tech or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline
Experience
- 5–10 years of hands-on mechanical product development experience
- Demonstrated experience leading or owning at least one product from concept through production
- Exposure to startup or high-iteration product environments strongly preferred
Technical Skills
- Expert-level proficiency in CAD tools: SolidWorks, CATIA, or equivalent (SolidWorks preferred)
- Proficiency in FEA tools: ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation, or equivalent
- Deep knowledge of material selection and mechanical design principles (metals, polymers, composites)
- Strong command of manufacturing processes: CNC machining, sheet metal, casting, injection moulding, and additive manufacturing (3D printing)
- Expertise in tolerance management, GD&T, design for assembly (DFA), manufacturability (DFM), and practical design for real-world constraints and usability.
- Familiarity with mechatronic integration, working alongside PCB layout, sensors, and actuators
PREFERRED EXPOSURE
