This role will work with customers, business teams, AI teams, and architects to understand use cases, assess existing data landscape, define the data roadmap, and also actively build data pipelines, data lakes, data warehouses, lakehouses, and curated datasets, especially for Microsoft/Azure-based customers.
The person should be able to lead the data engineering direction while also contributing hands-on to implementation.
Key Responsibilities
- Understand customer business processes, AI use cases, analytics needs, and reporting requirements.
- Assess existing data sources, data quality, integration gaps, and platform readiness.
- Define the data foundation roadmap required to support AI and analytics use cases.
- Design and build data lakes, data warehouses, lakehouses, and curated data layers.
- Build and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines for data ingestion, transformation, and loading.
- Work with structured and unstructured data from enterprise systems, files, APIs, databases, ERP, CRM, and operational platforms.
- Develop pipelines using Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake, Synapse, Microsoft Fabric, Databricks, SQL, Python, PySpark, and related tools.
- Create clean, trusted datasets for Power BI, analytics, GenAI, RAG, copilots, and AI agents.
- Implement data quality checks, reconciliation, validation, error handling, and monitoring.
- Document data sources, data flows, mappings, transformation logic, and data models.
- Define and follow standards for data security, access control, metadata, lineage, governance, and performance.
- Guide junior data engineers and review their work where needed.
- Work closely with AI engineers to make enterprise data AI-ready.
- Support pre-sales, customer discovery, solutioning, RFP responses, estimations, and proposal content for Data + AI programs.
- Communicate data architecture, implementation approach, risks, and roadmap clearly to customers and internal leadership.
Required Skills
- 7+ years of experience in data engineering, ETL/ELT development, data platforms, or cloud data engineering.
- Strong hands-on experience building data pipelines, data lakes, data warehouses, or lakehouse platforms.
- Good experience with Microsoft data ecosystem: Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake, Synapse, Microsoft Fabric, Databricks, SQL, and Power BI.
- Strong SQL skills and good knowledge of data modeling, data warehousing, and data integration patterns.
- Experience working with APIs, databases, files, enterprise applications, and operational data sources.
- Ability to convert business and AI use cases into data requirements and implementation plans.
- Experience with data quality, validation, reconciliation, error handling, and pipeline monitoring.
- Ability to lead small teams while remaining hands-on in design and development.
- Strong communication, documentation, and stakeholder management skills.
Good to Have
- Experience with Microsoft Fabric, OneLake, Delta Lake, Medallion Architecture, and Lakehouse design.
- Exposure to GenAI, RAG, vector databases, semantic search, copilots, or agentic AI use cases.
- Experience with Salesforce, SAP, ServiceNow, ERP, CRM, finance, operations, or customer data.
- Knowledge of data governance, cataloging, metadata, lineage, security, privacy, and compliance.
- Experience supporting pre-sales, RFPs, estimations, or solution presentations.
Ideal Candidate
Someone who can sit with the customer, understand the business use case, identify what data foundation is missing, define the roadmap, and also roll up their sleeves to build the pipelines, data lake, warehouse, lakehouse, and AI-ready datasets.
