About the Studio & Project
Flawky Studios is currently entering pre-production on Project: Light & Shadow, a gritty, PC-exclusive Action-RPG developed in Unreal Engine 5. The game features a dark-fantasy "Indo-Gothic" aesthetic, blending corrupted architectural styles with heavy, methodical combat. We are a dedicated indie team looking for a technical and creative leader to shape the visual identity of our cast.
About the Position
We are seeking a versatile Lead Character Artist to define the visual identity of the heroes, villains, and enemies within our world.
To maximize production efficiency, we are heavily leveraging Epic’s MetaHuman framework. Therefore, this role is not focused on sculpting base organic anatomy; rather, you will function as the game’s primary digital costumer and weaponsmith. You will be responsible for transforming MetaHuman bases into unique, battle-hardened warriors using custom, high-fidelity assets.
Key Responsibilities
- Character Customization (MetaHuman Pipeline): Utilize MetaHuman Creator and Quixel Bridge to generate diverse character bases.
- Costume & Cloth: Design, model, and simulate high-fidelity clothing using Marvelous Designer or standard sculpting workflows, ensuring proper fit and drape over the MetaHuman rig.
- Armor & Hard Surface: Create intricate armor sets (Helmets, Cuirasses, Greaves) that strictly adhere to the game’s Indo-Gothic and dark fantasy aesthetic.
- Weapon Design & Modeling: Model and texture the game’s weaponry, including realistic melee weapons, firearms, and stylized magical implements. Ensure weapons are constructed with animation functionality in mind (proper pivot points, separable parts for reloading/transformations).
- Texturing & Material Definition: Masterfully utilize Substance Painter to create realistic PBR materials (worn leather, battered steel, oxidized copper) that match the high fidelity of the MetaHuman skin shaders, maintaining consistent texel density.
- Implementation & Optimization: Properly rig and skin custom meshes (clothes/armor) to the MetaHuman skeleton in Unreal Engine 5 to prevent clipping during heavy combat animations. Create efficient LODs for optimal performance.
Qualifications
- Portfolio Requirement: A strong portfolio demonstrating high-quality Hard Surface Modeling (Armor/Weapons) and Cloth Simulation. (Note: We prioritize gear and hard surface design over organic anatomy sculpting for this specific role).
- Technical Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of ZBrush, Maya/Blender, and Substance Painter. Experience with Marvelous Designer is highly preferred.
- MetaHuman Experience: Familiarity with the “Mesh to MetaHuman” workflow and general MetaHuman integration.
- Engine Skills: Proven experience importing skeletal meshes, setting up physics/cloth, and configuring materials in Unreal Engine 5.
Compensation & Partnership
This position is structured as a high-stakes partnership for our indie studio.
- Profit Sharing: You will be awarded a legally binding share of 5.5% of the game’s Net Profit following commercial release.
- Creative Attribution: Under our Idea Attribution Program, unique character designs or weapon lore you author will be formally credited to you.
