About the Department
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Serves as an integral part of the Parks and Human Summer Camp Program. Works with school-aged children to ensure they are provided with a safe and healthy environment during the summer camp program hours. This is a temporary position, which carries no employee benefits or paid time off. Campers are ages 6 through 13 years of age.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general guidance and direction of the Director of Parks and Human Services or designee.

Position Duties
- Oversees daily operations of the summer camp site, ensuring effective supervision of campers ages 6–13 across all assigned groups and activities.
- Plans, coordinates, and supervises a variety of age-appropriate programs, including fitness activities, arts & crafts, recreational games, sports, and special events.
- Provides direction and guidance to camp staff, ensuring activities are well-organized, engaging, and aligned with program goals.
- Ensures the safety and well-being of all campers by enforcing camp policies, procedures, and safety protocols at all times.
- Serves as the primary point of contact for parents/guardians; communicates effectively regarding camper participation, achievements, concerns, and behavioral matters.
- Monitors and evaluates staff performance, providing support, coaching, and leadership to maintain a positive and productive camp environment.
- Maintains accurate and up-to-date records, including attendance, rosters, dismissal logs, incident reports, and accident reports in accordance with departmental standards.
- Oversees the cleanliness and organization of the camp site, including light facility maintenance such as equipment management, trash removal, and ensuring restrooms and activity areas are safe and presentable.
- Collaborates closely with the Camp Coordinator to ensure smooth program operations and successful implementation of camp initiatives.
- Demonstrates strong leadership, professionalism, and decision-making skills when addressing camper or staff issues.
- Ensures adequate staff-to-camper ratios and proper supervision coverage at all times.
- Maintains punctuality and reliable attendance as essential functions of the position.
- Must be willing and able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions for extended periods (up to 8 hours per day).
- Administers or oversees basic first aid for minor injuries and ensures proper documentation and follow-up.
- Performs additional duties as needed to support the overall success of the Summer Camp and Parks and Human Services programs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree.
- Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory or teaching working experience in a school setting.
- CPR and First Aid Certification is mandatory and must be current throughout summer camp. Certifications training will be provided through the Parks and Human Services Department.

- Basic principles of youth fitness, physical activity, and age-appropriate exercise techniques.
- Understanding of child development and behavior management strategies for school-age children.
- Knowledge of safety practices, injury prevention, and basic first aid procedures.
- Familiarity with recreational games, sports, and group fitness activities suitable for children.
- Ability to lead and instruct engaging, age-appropriate fitness and recreational activities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with children, parents, and staff.
- Classroom/group management skills with the ability to maintain structure and discipline in a positive manner.
- Organizational skills to plan activities, manage time, and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to motivate and encourage children of varying fitness levels and abilities.
- Ability to maintain a safe, inclusive, and energetic environment at all times.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions for extended periods.
- Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency or high-pressure situations.
- Ability to work collaboratively with supervisors and team members to support program goals.
- Ability to successfully pass physical, drug testing and background check.
NOTE: Finger printing is required; all finger prints will be checked through the State of Florida's Volunteer and Employee Criminal History System (VECHS) as well as through the Department of Children and Families (DCF).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
