About the Department
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Serves as an integral part of the Parks and Human Summer Camp Program. Works with school-aged children to ensure they are provided with a safe and healthy environment during the summer camp program hours. This is a temporary position, which carries no employee benefits or paid time off. Campers are ages 6 through 13 years of age.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general guidance and direction of the Director of Parks and Human Services or designee.

Position Duties
- Plan and deliver engaging, age-appropriate academic lessons in subjects such as reading, writing, math, and basic science for campers ages 6–13.
- Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet varying learning styles, abilities, and grade levels within assigned groups.
- Create a fun, supportive, and inclusive classroom environment that encourages curiosity, participation, and confidence in learning.
- Incorporate hands-on activities, games, and creative projects to reinforce academic concepts and maintain camper engagement.
- Assess campers’ progress informally and provide feedback to support individual learning and development.
- Maintain classroom structure, manage behavior appropriately, and ensure a safe and respectful learning environment at all times.
- Collaborate with camp counselors and staff to coordinate schedules, transitions, and integrated camp programming.
- Supervise campers during instructional time, transitions, and designated camp activities, ensuring their safety and well-being.
- Prepare and organize instructional materials, supplies, and classroom setup daily.
- Communicate effectively with camp leadership regarding camper progress, behavior concerns, and classroom needs.
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and special camp events, including performances or showcases of camper learning.
- Ensure compliance with camp policies, procedures, and all safety guidelines.
- Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating professionalism, enthusiasm, and strong interpersonal skills.
- Performs additional duties as needed to support the overall success of the Summer Camp and Parks and Human Services programs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of the first two (2) years of four (4) years of the teaching degree. Current college transcripts must be provided.
- Must possess a current teaching certification.
- Minimum of two (2) years of active teaching experience in a K-12 educational setting.
- Provide proof of experience, such as a letter from a school or another verifiable document that clearly confirms the required teaching experience.
- CPR and First Aid Certification is mandatory and must be current throughout summer camp. Certifications training will be provided through the Parks and Human Services Department.
Other Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of fundamental academic subjects, including reading, writing, mathematics, and basic science appropriate for elementary and middle school-aged children.
- Understanding of age-appropriate teaching strategies and child development for youth ages 6–13.
- Knowledge of classroom management techniques and positive behavior guidance practices.
- Familiarity with lesson planning, curriculum development, and activity-based learning approaches.
- Basic knowledge of safety procedures, emergency response, and child supervision standards in a camp or educational setting.
- Strong instructional and presentation skills with the ability to make learning engaging and interactive.
- Effective classroom management and behavior redirection skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain concepts clearly to children of varying ages and abilities.
- Organizational and time management skills to plan lessons, manage transitions, and maintain structured daily schedules.
- Creativity in developing hands-on activities, games, and projects that reinforce academic concepts.
- Interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with campers, parents/guardians, and staff.
- Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills in a fast-paced camp environment.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet diverse learning styles, needs, and attention spans.
- Ability to maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment.
- Ability to supervise and manage groups of children in both classroom and outdoor settings.
- Ability to remain patient, flexible, and calm when addressing behavioral or situational challenges.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team with camp counselors and leadership staff.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize responsibilities, and respond effectively to changing schedules or needs.
- Ability to serve as a positive role model, demonstrating professionalism, enthusiasm, and a commitment to youth development.
- Ability to work collaboratively with supervisors and team members to support program goals.
- Ability to successfully pass physical, drug testing and background check.
NOTE: Finger printing is required; all finger prints will be checked through the State of Florida's Volunteer and Employee Criminal History System (VECHS) as well as through the Department of Children and Families (DCF).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
