About the Department

The Program Manager for Texas Academy is a professional full-time position responsible for managing the daily operations of the Texas Academy, a program for gifted and talented students to fulfill their junior and senior high school requirements by taking university classes and participating in the college experience at Lamar University. This includes assisting with supervising residence life, providing outstanding student support, overseeing the peer mentor program, serving as primary contact for parents, providing administrative support in areas such as financial aid and scholarships, public relations/social media, and builds industry partnerships, and coordinates application processes. This position reports to the Dean of the Honors College/Director of the Texas Academy and will collaborate across campus with academic, enrollment management, and student service departments, faculty, staff, and students.

Position Duties

    • Assists with Residence Life and compliance with student behavior conduct and training. Communicates with RAs and security personnel, responds to emergencies, serving as a hearing officer on disciplinary issues, and being responsible for after-hour on-call responsibilities.
    • Assists with student-related needs; planning and coordinating the peer mentor program; serving as an advisor on student organizations.
    • Builds, screens, and processes prospective student applications, schedules and participates in interviews, reviews new student paperwork, applications, and manages recruitment events.
    • Creates communication plans for prospective students; manages social media platforms for Texas Academy and STEM summer camp; promotes media releases, sets up interviews, and assists with website development. Creates and uses all social media platforms, develops the website, and communicates with all current students about all requirements.
    • Logs all 504, Deaf/Blind Waivers with the State and TEA for compliance; develop and monitor accountability reports; manage and track Texas Academy service hours. Develops reports for the Texas Education Agency and other state-mandated health entities.
    • Plans and assists with special events, assessments, data entry, and programming; providing enrichment opportunities through field trips, lectures, performances, and tours. Other events outside of regular work hours may be required.
    • Serve as the primary contact for parents, meets with parents, and communicates all functions and activities with parents and students.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
    • 3-5 years of experience working with college or high school students, including coordination of programs and development of the student experience.
    • Bachelor’s Degree required
    • Relevant experience required – working with multiple departments that support student success
    • Knowledge of college and university academic and student programs for student success
    • Experience with the implementation of high-impact practices enhancing student learning, including learning communities, service learning, and co-curricular learning programs
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Desired Qualifications: 
    • Bachelor’s degree with at least three years of experience working in internal departments that support students in higher education
    • Experience with external programs and partnerships, successful leadership experience in programs and day-to-day operations, and media experience
    • Ability to learn and manage new software platforms and programs, clubs, and committees for student-related events.
    • Ability to work with high school students in an academic environment or setting

Physical Requirements: This position requires sitting and standing for extended periods of time; must be able to lift at least 15 pounds to complete the essential job functions.

Job Conditions: Duties are typically performed within the Texas Academy building, on the LU campus, and at various event locations.
