CUSTODIAN JOB TERMS
Employee must be able to work in an individual and well as team cleaning atmosphere with two or more custodian/staff members. Employee is responsible for cleaning areas assigned in a manner satisfactory to the Custodial Supervisor, Director of Operations and Facilities with input from the Head Custodian and Building Principal.
1. Minimum requirement is High School Diploma or equivalent
2. Successful employment experience in a custodial/maintenance position
3. Valid Washington State driver’s license
4. Valid First Aid/CPR card is desired

Hours per Day: 8 hrs- SWING

JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Head Custodian – Swing Shift (Secondary)
REPORTS TO: Executive Director, Operations
DIRECTS: Building Custodial Staff
SUMMARY: The Head Custodian is a member of the Facilities Team and is primarily responsible for
ensuring that the facility in which they work is safe, healthy and prepared at all times for the teaching and
learning work and the community activities that take place there. The Head Custodian accomplishes this by
cleaning assigned areas and by coordinating other building custodial staff members to ensure that all assigned
buildings and grounds are maintained in a safe, healthy and clean condition at all times. The Head Custodian
is responsible for working with the Principal and Head Secretary to provide leadership in the building in order
to meet the District’s Mission, Vision and Goals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be
assigned.
Communicate with day custodian, coordinate facility use and coordinate cleaning and preparation
for the next day
Provide building leadership with the principal and the head secretary
Address the needs of the community, students and staff during the evening
Be a friendly, helpful ambassador to facility users
Be a friendly, helpful presence for students
Assess the cleanliness and safety of the school and address any deficiencies with team members
Ensure that the school is prepared for the next school day
Provide excellence in Cleaning and Service Standards
Maintain punctual and regular attendance.
Maintain assigned areas of responsibility in a clean and sanitary condition. Clean and sanitize
toilets, sinks, shower rooms and fixtures, and refill all dispensers in building. Empty wastebaskets
and trash containers, clean chalkboards, dry erase boards, and erasers. Perform floor stripping,
waxing, and sealing.
Coordinate custodial staff and oversee their work on a daily basis, including substitute custodians
assigned to building.
Assign and assess each custodian regarding their area of responsibility on a daily basis.
Maintain adequate inventory of custodial supplies on hand, including issuance and keeping of
stock control records.
Use power equipment and hand tools (i.e., broom, mop, squeegee, buffer, polisher, carpet
machine, and vacuum) required in the cleaning and general maintenance of building, including
floors, walls, carpets, and furniture.
Perform routine maintenance such as repairing lockers, playground equipment, furniture and
cabinets; cleaning clogged drains; minor electrical and equipment repairs.
Initiate work orders for services needed which are beyond the scope of what can be reasonably
expected of custodial staff and forward work orders to site administrator.
Call in emergency repairs and make emergency repairs as able.
Coordinate and assign minor work to custodial staff.
Change lamps both inside and out.
Attend Head Custodian and custodial team coordination meetings as scheduled by the Operations
Director.
Establish and maintain working relations with staff, students, and the public.
Observe strict confidentiality regarding student and personnel information.
OTHER DUTIES:
Monitor equipment use and recommend replacement equipment as needed.

Complete and submit supply and equipment orders on behalf of all building custodial staff to the
custodial lead.
Schedule assigned personnel to meet emergency and abnormal conditions.
Assist faculty and support staff to prepare supplies and equipment for emergency conditions.
Periodically review emergency procedures with other building custodians.
Work with the team if short handed because a substitute is not available or due to extra activities.
Perform minor repairs on equipment and furniture.
Maintain clean sidewalks and entryways and remove litter from flowerbeds.
Maintain parking lot areas, and keep drains free from debris.
Keep building gutters free from debris.
Set up and remove furniture required for special events; move furniture, equipment, supplies, and
tools.
Maintain building security when facilities are not in use by checking for unlocked doors, windows,
unauthorized occupants; turn on and off heating and ventilating equipment as instructed.
Notify management concerning need for major repairs or additions to lighting, heating, and
ventilating equipment.
Maintain custodial supply rooms and equipment in a clean and orderly manner.
Assist faculty in emergencies, and as time allows under normal conditions.
Assist in shipping of outgoing supplies and materials, verify, and sign receipts for incoming
supplies and materials.
Assist the Principal, Custodial Supervisor, and the Department Director in special and annual
evaluations of assigned custodial personnel.
Facilitate the use and proper care of buildings by Community Education and other community
groups.
Schedule custodial personnel for weekend and after regular hours work.
Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
1. Minimum requirement is High School Diploma or equivalent.
2. Three years minimum successful employment experience in a custodial/maintenance position.
3. Successful employment history in a lead position demonstrating leadership skills, dependability
and good attendance.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
1. Valid Washington State driver’s license
2. Valid First Aid/CPR card – willingness to obtain and maintain
LANGUAGE SKILLS
1. Ability to read, comprehend, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and

The employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee will work with
