STRUCTURED LEARNING CENTER INSTRUCTOR
Job Summary
The special education teacher will create a program and classroom environment favorable to learning and personal
growth of identified special education students, including students who fall within the spectrum of autism disorders
and those identified as needing a structured learning approach to education. This person will write, monitor, and
adjust Individualized Educational Plans, meet with parents, work with paraeducators and other special education staff
assigned to the program as they implement the instructor’s daily schedule and plans for the students. The instructor
will establish effective rapport with students, motivate students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to
provide a strong foundation for future learning in accordance with each student’s individualized educational program.
The teacher will design and implement appropriate behavioral interventions, provide specially designed instruction in
accordance with the IEP, and work effectively as a team member with other special education staff. The instructor is
responsible for planning daily schedules and supervising paraeducators as they implement individualized instruction
plans.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Identify student needs, write individualized education plans and make appropriate referrals, develop
strategies and monitor plan implementation; adjust as necessary.
• Train, supervise and work cooperatively with paraeducators assigned to the program as they implement the
IEP
• Provide the daily schedule for students and staff assigned to the program
• Provide clear and focused instruction for all students by using a variety of teaching strategies to assure
successful learning
• Closely monitor student progress by using quality classroom-based assessments
• Instruct students in basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures
of the school district
• Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction;
adapt curriculum to meet the needs of students
• Translate lesson plans into developmentally appropriate learning experiences
• Teach to the Essential Academic Learning requirements
• Communicate enthusiasm for learning
• Communicate regularly and positively with parents
• Assist students with social and life skill development
• Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to achieve an optimal learning environment
• Evaluate students’ academic and social growth; keep appropriate records and prepare progress reports
• Be available to students and parents for educational related purposes outside the instructional day
• Plan and coordinate the work of employees, parents, and volunteers in the classroom and on field trips
• Create an environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, interest centers, and exhibits
of student work
• Work with students
• Promote and practice professional growth and development
• Observe strict confidentiality regarding student information
• Develop positive relationships with students, parents, other staff members and administration as well as
community members
Qualification Requirements
• Bachelor’s Degree
• Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with special education endorsement
• Valid Washington State driver’s license
• Knowledge of rules, regulations, and policies governing special education
• Valid CPR/First Aid card or the ability to obtain one
• Ability to safely restrain a student if necessary to prevent harm to student or others in classroom
• Preferred knowledge of and experience working with autistic students
