About the role

The Kotak School of Sustainability at IIT Kanpur, India (https://iitk.ac.in/kss ) has launched a transformative initiative to lead India—and the world—towards a sustainable future. Over the next five years, it aims to embed sustainability into education, research, and policy, fostering innovation and shaping practices for lasting environmental, social, and economic impact. We are reaching out to seek your support in identifying potential candidates for faculty positions at the School. Applications are invited from interested faculty candidates having proven track record in experimental and/or modeling background and expertise in materials, processes, and systems related to following priority areas: Climate Modeling and Resilience Model development and evaluation, simulation setup and execution, application of machine learning methods to climate science. Climate models of varying complexities and their possible mitigation strategies. Emergence of extreme events in weather and climate. Research methodology includes theory, modeling, instrumentation, and data analysis. For national and global scenario, climate resilience by assessing, monitoring, and predicting the current and potential climate change impacts on natural resources, urbanizing land use and agriculture and developing mitigation and adaptation strategies. In addition to regular courses on fluids and numerical methods, candidate is expected to teach the following advanced courses: Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, Numerical Weather Forecasting, Meteorology and Climatology, AI applications in Weather and Climate, Big Data Applied to Earth Systems Sciences, Climate Change. Environmental Science and Engineering and policy Developing sustainable technologies: paradigm shifts needed to face the most urgent environmental challenges facing human societies such as energy/resources crises and climate change.Fundamental changes to earth system processes and elemental cycling, the fate and transformation of emerging chemical and microbiological contaminants, the eco-evolutionary dynamics of spatially-structured populations, and the recovery of valuable resources from waste streams. Water and wastewater treatment engineering: Waste management, Life cycle assessment, Waste-to-energy, Fluidization, Gasification, Combustion, Waste-to-chemicals, Plastics recycling, Anaerobic digestion, Composting, Leachate treatment, Waste biorefinery, Bioplastic management, Waste reuse and recycle. Sustainable bioproducts that can contribute to climate solutions, circular bioeconomy. Technical support and strategic guidance to Government and other stakeholders on environmental and social performance, including environmental management, climate risk/assessment and policies. Hydrology and Water Resources Management Resource recovery engineering, hydrology, and water resources design, mitigating exposure to chemical contaminants, and water quality engineering. Sustainability and resilience of water, sludge, solid/hazardous waste and agricultural residue management in India, Systems Approaches for Sustainable Engineering, with a mission to advance environmental engineering solutions in water-energy-waste systems through the development and use of decision-making tools in support of achieving a sustainable planet, to draw upon advanced tools, data science (machine learning and artificial intelligence), statistical and stochastic modeling, data driven methodologies, and risk analysis to develop optimal solutions that address societal challenges while considering technical feasibility, economic, social, public and environmental health outcomes. Ecological Restoration and Management Species Interactions, Biodiversity and Society: herbivory, predation, competition, mutualism, species invasions, biogeographic patterns, extinction, climate change, and conservation, Ecology of individuals, physiological and behavioral ecology, population ecology, community ecology, Urban Ecology, and ecosystem ecology. Artificial neural networks, Data management in geotechnical engineering, Advanced remote and proximal sensing methods in a unique and complex salt-affected environment to test and refine AI technologies, with the potential for significant agricultural, environmental, and socio-economic benefits. Social-ecological understanding of human Environment interactions, Carbon Capture and Storage: C-cycle, sequestration in ecology, Ecological Economics, and System Dynamics. Academic Programmes: The school has already started a Master's program on Artificial Intelligence for Sustainability and expected to start Ph. D. program soon.
